If you're transferring your account to another server, before you actually do the transfer it's a good idea to rename your old account something like "(YOUR ACCOUNT) has moved" and put a link to your new account in the profile text.

Most Mastodon apps show links to new accounts automatically, but some don't. Renaming and including the link in the profile means everyone will see the redirect and new account, no matter what app they use.

For an example see here:

One footnote to this:

Having migrated, if you decide you'd like to continue using the old account (maybe as a backup or alt), but WITHOUT actually migrating your followers back to it, removing the redirect restores it to normal operation.

@FediTips
Also change your profile pic to a cobweb or stop sign or something. When creating a post, both accounts will still come up in the suggestion (assuming you're using the same username at the start), and you can't see much of the domain before it chops off, so a visual cue is very handy.

@SmartmanApps

Yup, good idea. I usually make my old accounts' profile images black and white so that people can see a contrast with the colourful new account pictures.

@FediTips could you explain to a relative newb what the benefits of moving to another server are for the ordinary user, please? I'm on @Social at the moment - is this the best place for me to be? Bit confused...

@nickmajor81

Would strongly recommend moving to another server if you can, there's a step-by-step guide here: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/

Some reasons:

-If people start bunching up on a few massive servers, it makes it much easier for some Musk-style crook to buy the network out.

-Mastodon.social is really, really overcrowded and suffers tech hitches. It's also harder to get a response from staff.

-There are fewer staff per user on mastodon.social, so quality of moderation tends to be poorer.

@FediTips thanks for that. I'll definitely be moving out, but is there one you think would be good to move to?

@nickmajor81

It depends on what your priorities are, but for example any of the ones at https://joinmastodon.org/servers or https://fedi.garden should be okay.

They are all committed to something called the "Covenant" where they promise to have responsible moderation, at least two members of staff, daily backups and at least three months warning if they ever shut down (so that people can move their accounts elsewhere without losing followers).

@FediTips Awesome, thank you 🙏
Going to move it asap.
