Reading the post about therapy reminded me of the 1942 film "Now, Voyager".

We can see in this film the beginnings of a turn in US culture away from the social towards the psychological. Neurotic WASP spinster Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) undergoes treatment at the sanitarium of psychiatrist Dr Jaquith (Claude Rains) and is reborn as an confident woman capable of independent love.

Notwithstanding the problematic cultural turn it represents, "Now, Voyager" is a film I love. Bette Davis, Claude Rains, and Paul Henreid are all at their best in this adult drama of growth, love, and renunciation.

I gave up smoking long ago, but still miss the romance of cigarettes, given its definitive depiction in 'Now,Voyager":

An instant classic: when Paul Henreid lights two cigarettes at once
