Remember the compiz cube? Make computers fun again
@fluffykittycat <Nim> whatever happened to this type of thing, leverage more spacial memory in ui
@TransGal4872 @fluffykittycat can't implement WM fun, too busy removing the system tray

@TransGal4872 recent trends in GUI design are less skeuomorphic and more minimalist. I suspect it's because people are comfortable with the concept of using a computer now and don't need the real-life metaphors as much so the focus is more on practicality.

also these flashy effects are resource-hungry so it's more for fun. I haven't had the glory of the cube for a long time but I can still get stuff done.

I think that OS design should revisit some of these older concepts to try and make things fun and useful. I feel like we've reached a stable but boring maturity

@fluffykittycat <Nim> I like older guis better, I've been maining WindowMaker (with lxpanel added on) for 5 years now. I miss how easy and fast the classic mac gui was compared to things like plasma
@TransGal4872 I feel like we need a next generation linux distro that builds an integrated UI. basically we need free software Steve jobs but good
@fluffykittycat <Nim> I don't know about that, Gnome is trying this and it's been absolutly horrible
@TransGal4872 the last great attempt in my opinion was Unity. great dock, convergence plans, etc. sad it didn't last. you'd probably want to fork an existing DE instead of messing with a mainline one.
@fluffykittycat I remember not feeling fear every time I’d run apt-get update
