"Cognitively speaking, we metabolize mistakes."

I've been reading William Wimsatt and he expresses a core component of my teaching philosophy better than I ever managed.

@ct_bergstrom “Never let a good crisis go to waste”.
@ct_bergstrom That's the heart of my management philosophy (eh, insofar as I have one) as well. I like to say that, as a scientist, mistakes are my stock in trade.

@ct_bergstrom

that's RNA's philosophy practically in totality, at least the top line. 👍

also imo kinda kool to realize that the constraints that form and govern the universe we're in, while permitting a lot of other stuff as well, support this pattern, too. It's composed of approximate replication, which permits information storage and retrieval (aka memory to us), and local pattern reflection and variation, how we can conjecture novel ways to fail further towards accurate prediction.

@ct_bergstrom Look, some competition for @effinbirds, finally !
@ct_bergstrom Which of the several well-known William Winsatts was this quote from? I have my likely guess but am curious.
@cxj the philosopher of science at the University of Chicago / university of Minnesota
