If you use an Android phone to access Mastodon, I highly recommend either Megalodon or Tusky as good apps for reading and posting.
If you an Apple user, I've heard good things about Ivory.
* Home feed is just who and what you've chosen to follow.
* Local feed is just posts from people on your local instance (mastodon.social in your case)
* World feed is all posts your instance is aware of (posts and accounts people on your server follow)

Instances: mastodon.social is one of the biggest instances (servers) on Masto, but that does mean that it's more likely to end up with spammy accounts, causing the instance to be temporarily (or permanently!) muted or blocked by other instances and that can make it challenging to build your timeline.
Depending on the type of community you're looking for, you may find it helpful at some point to migrate to a smaller instance with more rigorous moderation! Some smaller instances I personally really love: federatedfandom.net, blorbo.social, nerdjoy.social
Tag tracking: I love this! You can follow or track a tag and then posts in that tag will appear in your timeline. For my own peace and sanity, I follow #SilentSunday, #Mosstodon, and #Bloomscrolling. No regrets!
