Turning a blind eye to the African coast of the #RedSea

All eyes are currently on the #Gaza strip and on the Iranian "Axis of resistance". While the #US and the #UK bomb the #Houthis in #Yemen and the #EU puts together a defensive mission to patrol the Red Sea, no or little attention has been paid to its African coast.

To wit, the discrepancy between the means pledged by the #EU, #UK, #US against the #Houthis, offensively or defensively, and the skeleton EU mission to fight piracy off #Somalia "#Atalanta". Mainly supported by #Spain throughout the years (since Dec 2008) and with a mandate extended to Dec 2024, only French frigate Languedoc came as "associated support" to Atalanta 50 days ago

President Deni's #PMPF will not suffice to contain a practice rooted in the deep instability and financial insecurity in #Puntland. The recent #autocoup securing his second mandate will not fondamentally change such circumstances. Neighbouring #Somaliland has been deeply destabilized by a recent civil war that allowed for the secession of #SSC-#Khatumo last summer, as well as the signing of a MoU with #Ethiopia that opens the possibility of an all-out war with her Somali neighbour, including insurgencies in Somaliland itself and in the Somali region of Ethiopia. Somaliland's leadership is itself fragilized, hindering the state's capabilities in terms of maritime security.

Little attention is likewise paid to the all-out war and large scale atrocities currently happening in #Sudan due to the civil war opposing warlords Hemedti (#RSF) and Burhan (#SAF). That the latter has captured the state and currently holds the #RedSea coast with the help of Beja rebels is not a cause for reassurance.
