Anti-porn style feminism dates back to the suffragettes. Its been exploited by anti feminists, but does authentically originate in the early feminist movement.

The suffragette movement is inspirational, especially in their methods. They did very needed work. But like every movement, they were heterogeneous. Not every aspect of it was good. There was a lot of racism and many individuals involved went on to become fascists.

Its important to learn from both the successes and failures of past movements. They are neither wholly good nor wholly bad.

That something so very flawed was still able to meet so many goals and have so many diverse organisations working in the same sphere is also something to bear in mind as a model and warning. Flawed movements can still get results. Perfection is not required, even as we all strive to do better. The flaws that slip through hold us back. But a flawed victory is often better than not trying at all.

@celesteh the north-american suffragette movement was *racist* AF. By design, not accident.

They were on a race to ensure that white women got thr right to vote before black men did. The racism *motivated* them, and guess what, they won.

I think the lesson here is not "there are good things with imperfections" but "let's try not to glamorize our past".

@nonlinear I didn't know that about the north Americans! I thought a lot of them had backgrounds in the abolitionist movement, but I guess that wasn't free of racism either.

@celesteh I'm pretty sure some suffragists were also abolitionists, but the kind that moved the needle wasn't. At all.

Part of their argument was about putting one political minority (white women) against another (black people).

ACLU has a cool article about it.

@celesteh @ppatel Oh, this is true. If I were to lead some kind of accessibility movement, I would definitely be willing to work with a lot of different kinds of people. I wouldn’t otherwise want to have around me as the primary goal would be improving accessibility rather than all the other imperatives around human rights which are also important ones.

@celesteh YES! Another story, in the 1920s the suffragette movement was used by propagandist #edwardbernays. commissioned by what we would call today, Big tobacco he was able to manupulate women into taking up smoking and doubling the market to include women, by making smoking a symbol of the movement.

Because it was generally taboo for women to smoke, he covertly setup a photoshoot of a small group of marching #suffrogettes, who would stop for a smoke on his command, the headline he planned was "Sticks for freedom".

By featuring this meme on frontpages #bigtobacco doubled the number of smokers... the victims didn't even know they were being sold something. #memewarfare #pr #corporatemedia #indoctrination
