I've been discussing the idea of the #human-centered operating models with several practitioners, as opposed to the #technology-centered operating models.

⚙️ Starting with the Industrial Revolution and gaining more expression with Taylor's Scientific Management, companies tried to have people as the extension of the machine. Like we are a cog-wheel that can be easily replaced. A blind focus on #efficiency...

😢 This technology-centric approach to organizational design is terrible for humans. It damages our mental health, with an increase in #burnouts, #absentisms, and lack of engagement at work.

🌱 And what is the alternative, you may ask. The alternative is to respect our nature and understand that we are open systems. The organizational structure should match, which means that the organizational design should involve the people who are part of the organization! In that way, the operating model will focus on #effectiveness, which respects our nature and leverages what we are best at finding creative solutions for challenges. Together. As a group.

👽 This might sound alien; trust the people to design their own organization; however, it has proven to be the way to have a democratic organization where people enjoy being part of it. Not only do we thrive in an organization like that, but the organization performs better than our peers.

I'm happy to participate in different practitioners' communities and customer journeys where they want a more humane operating model.

What do you reckon? What is the next step in your organization's journey?
