After I read Isabel Wilkerson's book, I thought I would find other like minds here in the Bay Area to share and discuss the book's assumptions.

I was wrong.

@muiren Whenever I tried to talk about the book I have repeatedly been yelled at by my friends. But, many legal scholars over the years have looked at caste, written about it, and concluded it is not the same as American racism. We had a South Asian guest on our podcast last fall who said the same. She didn't spend the whole episode on the issue, but she does mention it.

The book now has the "don't criticize in public" status that the Obamas have. 🙅🏾‍♀️

@fulanigirl @muiren I remember talking to a South Asian friend about the caste system back in the early 80s. We were colleagues. She told me that there were people from her country who worked in her home for her family and the work they did was their position in life through a higher power; they were born into it and couldn't move out of that position.
@venitamathias @muiren Right, which is not like here. Also, it is religiously based in a way that is completely unlike Christian colonialism. But hey...Wilkerson is popular because she writes simply and people can understand her. And DuVernay is truly a goddess, so that combination...👀 with that combo...I'll just sit quietly here in my corner so the stans don't come for me. 👀
@muiren this is on my reading list for the year.
@stevenray Please, share your thoughts when you do.
@muiren I certainly will! 😊

@muiren We watched Origins last night, excellent, just as we’d expected of Ava DuVernay, and are glad to see our local public library has Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents in multiple formats, including large print, sound recording, and book adaptation for young adults. https://www.montereylibrary.org/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?idx=&q=caste+isabel+wilkerson&limit=&weight_search=1

The film wasn't the point.

Not finding interest in discussing the book that inspired it.

Sadly, the last local book club of seniors I joined in my hope for like minds, consciously avoided any challenging text by authors like Wilkerson, or the late Octavia E. Butler, but instead prefers books like Woopie Goldberg's biography.
