Secret Royal Inspector & Joy
(2021 - Viki, 16 1:00 eps)

A Joseon Secret Royal Inspector who would rather open a restaurant meets a fiercely independent woman & they team up to solve a political intrigue murder mystery. It has many similarities with "The Matchmaker." But it's much lighter - not as many characters to know & the mystery is not as complicated.

There's not anything particularly remarkable. The script is somewhat female centric, with strong, intelligent women. There are some funny moments & a few references to old westerns. The performances were good. The side characters are acted well and contribute nicely with their own small story lines. The villains are great.

If you want a light, bingeable, fun, Joseon mystery-romance, this works. But be warned, switching from slapstick comedy to dark murdering & back again happen quickly, so brace yourself.

Secret Royal Inspector & Joy

A secret royal inspector uncovers corruption and then ensures its perpetrators face justice. He cannot reveal himself or his intentions. Ra Yi Eon wanted...

@whoosh It was very enjoyable light entertainment. The anachronistic gourmet-foodie references were funny.

@JPK_elmediat

Yes! I LOLed at them being traveling foodies.

I've been watching Marry My Husband. I'm a sucker for time travel, especially when they work out the rules in an interesting way.
Some of the protagonist's efforts to alter events for a positive outcome created some interesting slapstick moments. Other changes are the classic duck into swan trope, also very well done.
They are only a few episodes into the series, but they managed a surprise twist, I should have seen coming. Very well played.

@JPK_elmediat
I also love "logical" time travel. I'm also a Park Min Young fan.

After reading your post, I may have to watch yet another episode tonight!

@whoosh @JPK_elmediat I'm considering putting #MarryMyHusband into my watchlist too. I'm not entirely convinced by the synopsis, however #ParkMinYoung is capable of turning even a #kdrama I don't like into an enjoyable one 😉

She's not my fave, except in #Healer However, I totally agree that amazing actors can transform an otherwise-dull drama into something magical. #kdrama

@EllenInEdmonton @whoosh @JPK_elmediat I don't think I would have finished What's Wrong With Secretary Kim if it weren't for #ParkMinYoung
Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not a big fan of #ParkSeoJoon

Oh, I really liked #ParkSeoJoon in #ItaewonClass, the first #kdrama that I watched on my own. Not sure how I'd feel about him in something else.

I am a PSJ fan & his chemistry with Park Min Young in "Secretary Kim" was fantastic. I hated his character probably for the first 1/2 of the series, but I loved seeing him evolve from a narcissist to someone who is more self-aware. I've seen several shows with him & have enjoyed them all. "Fight For My Way" was one he really did well.

In "Marry My Husband" I'm not familiar with the ML, but he is growing on me - a lot! I think PMY once again is doing an amazing job at playing this character.

The premise and synopsis doesn't do it justice. It does start in a dark place, but once it establishes the setting in the past, it turns into a self-affirmation arc - both in terms of personal relationships and office/corporate politics.
Watching the tables turn on the office bullies and the best friend & boyfriend is very satisfying.
They are moving some narrative elements quite quickly, the lead characters get on the same page quickly.
The Time Travel rules-constraints shape the choices and actions in an effective manner, in the story, so far.

Well, I ended up binging the available episodes of "Marry My Husband"!

It Is fantastic - but a different feeling from "Perfect Marriage"

In PM I was on board with the revenge from the get go - until the last episode where I learned my life lesson & vowed to be a better human. Isn't that what art is supposed to do?

In MMH, although revenge is involved, the story is much more about the FL coming to realizations.

In PM, the FL was almost instantly transformed. In MMH she learns something about herself in each episode.

Now I've put myself in Currently-Airing-Hell again!
