#MartinLutherKing convinced #NichelleNichols to stay on Star Trek. But did you know Nichelle played an important role helping to drive recruitment for #NASA in the years after playing #Uhura in #StarTrek?
She recruited #Sally Ride, #ColonelBluford & the first black female astronaut, #MaeJemison.
Watch this fun Drunk History video narrated by Ashley Nicole Black with Raven-Symoné as Nichols.

(The one where Riker was duplicated.)
Nichols visited the set during filming of Jemison's scenes. 1st #StarTrek episode LeVar Burton directed.
Jemison was the science mission specialist on the STS-47 Spacelab J flight, which launched September 12, 1992. While in space, Jemison began each shift by informing Mission Control in Houston "Hailing frequencies open." #mlkday

@spocko The thumbnail on this is Dr. Jemison being suited by Sharon Caples McDougle, the first Black woman to lead a NASA suit tech team. This is me with Sharon at the National Air and Space Museum last year.
@rlpaulprodn
Thank you for that detail!
@spocko This is Sharon speaking underneath the shuttle that she worked in for many years. This day was her first seeing the ship since NASA retired it.
@spocko she's still active! Doing science education and working on supporting minority students in the sciences

You DO realize that's the entire cast (sans Shatner) plus Roddenberry, not just Nichols, right? <JK> 😉

@MugsysRapSheet @mym @spocko

Of course (see the ALT-text). But the thread I was responding to was regarding Nichols.

@mym @spocko She narrated a documentary I produced on NASA’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. https://beta.prx.org/stories/169681-race-and-the-space-race

Excellent! I just pulled an 80 second clip of the documentary Race and the Space Race for this toot.
I'll listen to the whole story tonight!

In 2019, the Computer History Museum gave Katherine Johnson a Fellow award, accepted on her behalf by Dr Jemison.
I was lucky to talk to her briefly at the reception. She is every bit as multi-talented, dynamic and impressive in person as on-screen.

Katherine Johnson - CHM

For her exceptional calculations during the US space programs that brought the first humans to the Moon.

@spocko @mhoye the central planet in the new Bethesda game Starfield is named for her, btw.
@spocko she's a MD and a chemical engineer, also! I met her and LeVar Burton in 2014 at a conference about thinking 100 years ahead into humanity's future. Wish we were doing more of that these days.
@spocko I was just thinking of Nichelle Nichols when you posted this!! Thank you so much. 😸
@spocko This is one of the coolest things ever.
