@LALegault #JohnIbbitson at #TheGlobeAndMail called out #Liberal fence sitting on this today. Still no definitive statement, it seems. He notes the caucus itself is divided - Anthony Housefather and Marco Mendocino are clearly on the #Israeli side while others like Salma Zahid want the atrocities to stop.

Liberals trying to play both sides in Gaza conflict

Changing demographics and divisions among progressives are reflected in the Liberal caucus and in the uncertain response of the Trudeau government to accusations of Israeli genocide in Gaza

The Globe and Mail
@SheamusPatt @LALegault Given the obvious divisions in their own caucuses I am willing to give Trudeau -- and to a lesser extent Singh -- a pass on this one with the hope that based on Canadian history, both parties, but especially the government, will end up on the right side of history.
@SheamusPatt @LALegault Watching someone look for a position they can escape the moment with - or searching for some palatable yet reality-defying middle ground - is just as bad as being lied to.
@LALegault The #CBC has weighed on the confusion around #Canada's position, or lack thereof, regarding the #ICJ #genocide case brought forward by #SouthAfrica
@justintrudeau's statement that Canada will abide by the ICJ decision doesn't seem very significant to me - after all, any remedy it might propose would be directed at #Israel not #canada

After days of confusion, Trudeau government says it will abide by ICJ on genocide case against Israel | CBC News

Canada will abide by all rulings arising from South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), officials at Global Affairs Canada have told CBC News. The clarification comes after days of confusion over statements issued Friday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly in response to South Africa's claim.

In my view the significance is that judgements of the ICJ at least in theory have to be implemented by member countries. This means if the ICJ orders Israel to stop and they refuse member countries have to force them to stop , up to and including armed intervention . .This is a step closer to that happening and flies in the face of the US & Israel that often ignore international court rulings and influences others to do so A majour departure for Canada
