I previously tried a Pro Micro and DFPlayer to use custom samples on this delightful Salvation Army shop find, but the latency between hitting a key and getting a sound is just a bit too long to be of much musical use...
This is the best I managed to get out of it in the past - you can hear the half second delay between pressing a button and hearing the sample.
Also, anyone wants to book me for any singing gigs? 😂
Haha, same here - without blowing my own trumpet (tooting my own horn for you people across the pond) too much, this rendition of the tune is easily in my top 3 (which, admittedly, isn't hard 😜).
Except perhaps this tune I recorded for #RaspberryPiPico's first birthday.
This was before I fell out with #RaspberryPi because they accused me of sending an army of militant vegans after them. This happened after I had asked them very nicely to put their picture of pigs in blankets behind a CW.
When they refused and doubled down instead, some other people replied to aid me (in a civil manner).

It's an Elektron Model:Samples. I can't fully recommend it though. It eg lost its labelling after only a few months of fairly light use, and I personally never got on fully with its workflow and UI.
