16 months ago, @markcharnell contributed to a Kickstarter by Jose Cardona’s Mechanical Design Labs to support development of an Author Clock. When I saw the prototype mock-up, I said to Mark, “I have never wanted anything so much in my whole life.” The Author Clock became my birthday present for an age I have not been for 14 months. It arrived today, after months in which Cardona reported on quote collection and and product development. And I am in love. #authorclock 1/2

The clock displays each minute’s time as it appears verbally or numerically in passages from thousands of different literary works, a new passage every minute. The quotes appear on a black and white LCD screen that resembles the screen of a vintage Mac computer embedded in a wooden case. The whole experience is a bit like watching Christian Marclay’s 24-hour montage extravaganza “The Clock”—which I saw 2 or 3 hours of in Winnipeg in 2012–in a late 80s fern bar.
