Avista, an electrical and natural gas utility based in #Spokane, is requesting customers in Eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle conserve natural gas due to an issue with their supplier. I wonder if this is related to issues in Alberta.

At 20:53 the temperature in Spokane was -19°C. The forecast low tonight is -23°C.

Avista asks customers to conserve natural gas

@ingalls
Possible. Alberta is burning mucho methane right now. -40* in the shade.

*Do not make me give a unit for this!

@lauxmyth but it can’t be -40 K, that’s impossible!

@ingalls

Hmm. Note the date.

@ingalls yup, I'm in their service area, not far from me, the next substation (not the one I draw power from) went down because overload & artic conditions. Thankfully, many here (I'm outside Spokane proper) have wood stoves or fireplaces, but that only helps some & doesn't help if natural gas also goes belly up
@ingalls We're getting the same request in Portland.

@ingalls Cascade Natural in Bend is asking customers to cut back, too: https://ktvz.com/news/business/2024/01/12/cascade-natural-gas-asks-nw-bend-residents-to-reduce-natural-gas-use-during-extreme-cold-snap-to-maintain-service/

Why do I suspect they're all just laying the groundwork to get regulatory hurdles lowered?

Cascade Natural Gas asks NW Bend residents to reduce natural gas use during extreme cold snap to maintain service - KTVZ

Cascade Natural Gas on Friday asked customers in a large area of northwest Bend to reduce their natural gas usage from Friday evening at 6 p.m. until noon Monday due to the extreme cold temperatures due in the region. The utility has projects underway to resolve pipeline capacity issues.

@msbellows I’m certainly happy to suspect foul long game playing from the fossil fuels industry but it is true that natural gas infrastructure performs poorly in cold weather.
