#NowSpinning #MingusTakesManhattan by #CharlesMingus. This is a really special - limited to 1000 - boxset which captures the complete Birdland dates on #vinyl.
Sourced from the original tapes, courtesy of the #Mingus estate, the SQ falls short of audiophile but captures the thrill of these musicians playing live in that place at that time.
The boxset is well done, well pressed, but, really, it’s all about the music which mad, cacophonous, lyrical & whitehot.
Just to add that this set is put out by #NewLand & restored and remastered by #PeteReynolds (I am unfamiliar with his work).
Given that the set doesn’t state otherwise (and I did ask New Land, but didn’t receive a reply), I’m assuming it’s not AAA - I wonder if the restoration was done in the digital domain.
There are a few drop outs in places (on the first track of side B, for example, the sax fades right out & then back in). But it’s live, early 60s, & I didn’t find it distracting.
