#substack, by first refusing to ban nazis under the guise of being a "free speech" platform, and then turning around and saying "actually we'll ban some of the nazis", has taken the route that will piss off the most people possible
good work, boys

To be fair, they're following in the footsteps of every other social media company extant over the course of the last decade, so they're standing on the shoulders of some real giants.
Like and subscribe for more mixed and tortured metaphors.
What seems to be the trouble? So long as they keep their dog whistles finely tuned, surely nobody will have a real problem, or at least not one which can't be easily ignored.
These tech bros are free speech absolutists until they actually start thinking about the issue at any depth. When forced to deal with the issue in depth, they pivot to, "I will personally make all the decisions about who can speak and how much, I am just an absolutist."

You folks who work in tech make the world a much more wonderful place. We won't apply guilt by association.
All the Tech Bros do is show that we need to move beyond our authoritarian, capitalist culture.
Based on the tech folks I've met over the years, I believe that we would have much better experiences if the industry were run through co-ops where the employees have an actual voice in the product instead of listening to the depraved visions of the Tech Bros.

Chris Best revealed everything in the Nilay Patel interview and I think the subtext was so blatant and awkward it was difficult to grok.
Even Nilay was stunned.

Ah, yes.
The 'zero-tolerance bully rule' of moderation, which has of course never led to neurodivergent, queer, or BIPOC students being harassed mercilessly because they had an ill-considered faith in the rule of law.
Or gotten victims of domestic abuse murdered for same.
Or many, many other cases...
I'm also disappointed in Casey Newton's post on this where he literally asks his audience if Substack's pathetic response is good enough for him to keep supporting their platform. Several commenters who clearly didn't read beyond the headline said it was great news. Or maybe they just don't care.
Regardless, I'm not sharing his post for that reason. I'll wait for a news article or blog post *not* hosted on a Nazi Lite platform.
No, I got the impression that he's leaving it up to his audience, instead of following his own moral compass.
Update: According to The Verge, Substack is going to remove five publications, none of which have paid subscriptions enabled.
FIVE.

@molly0xfff the dril post excerpted in this post feels relevant here.
