@glightly asks about bike parties:

Q7. Does Bike Party or a similar thing exist where you are? Have you participated in it? Tell us about it.

Bike Party β€” a fresh new way to take back the streets

Born from the Critical Mass movement, these on-street bashes are revitalizing bicycle activism nationwide. The secret? More joy.

@ascentale @glightly A7) Perhaps it's called something different here ...or perhaps I'm just not invited. #BikeNite
@glightly @lopta where in IL do you live? There might be something nearby!
@ascentale @glightly A7
There is one in Boston, haven't participated yet. Might, one of these days. I've done a few group urban rides and generally enjoyed them (Game of Cones ice cream ride, a tour of new infrastructure, that sort of thing).

@ascentale @glightly Q7 Bikes are already a mainstream feature of daily life for all ages here in Japan. There might be exceptions somewhere in the country (maybe at summer festival time?), but generally I'm afraid that a cycling event that got in the way of people getting around (by whatever means) would just come across as a pointless nuisance, like the bōsōzoku that rev their motorcycle engines at low speed in groups late at night.

We helped with the first Salinas #BikeParty rides and loved them. Photo is from a 2012 SBP ride.

We've also enjoyed some Santa Cruz #BikeParties.

In Sept 2023 we responded to some #MontereyCounty media reports by writing "Rideout or Rude Out? Make your bike party courteous, safer, legal, and fun."
People organizing group social rides may find the 2-pg PDF in that post helpful. https://bikemonterey.org/rideout-or-rude-out-make-your-bike-party-courteous-safer-legal-and-fun.html

@ascentale @glightly A7. there’s #SFBikeParty in San Francisco and I went to it tonight! https://sfba.social/@jakedonham/111707262215362910 I like the joyful togetherness of it and the smiles and waves from people watching us go by #BikeNite

A7. we had it tonight! @signaltap brought some kind of cake for some kind of holiday

It's also nice to have an event where you can dance that's outdoors. Plus people are really happy to see us biking around. I love when we go down commerical streets that are busy on a Friday night because we get the best reaction, but we also went by a (stationary) party in the park today that cheered us on

@ascentale @glightly #BikeNite A7: Our local CM seems a lot of party already. Actually, way too much much party for my taste: Too loud, too much music to enjoy the ride. (And I'd never go to their after-party.)

And as I hate to wear suits or to dress up, I surely wouldn't enjoy and hence not take part in any such event as described on that page. The pictures on that page make me shudder.

@ascentale @glightly A7
San Diego has a lot of social rides, and most of them are listed on https://bikingis.fun/ and the associated instagram account. My favorites have been the monthly-ish full-moon bike rides: https://theawarewolfs.com/fmbr/

Biking Is Fun

@ascentale @glightly - So Bike Party was "fresh" 10 years ago, when Critical Mass had turned 20. So now it must be only 50% as fresh as Critical Mass was.
