Well, this sucks.

A loved one is positive on rapid tests.

Anyone know how to get #Paxlovid in Canada?

Anyone know of other protocols or medicines for faster recovery / lower odds of #LongCOVID ?

She's isolating and resting, and is pretty willing to accept well-founded advice in the few minutes she's awake here and there.

I'm not willing to suggest colloidal silver or other treatments that don't have supporting evidence, so please don't offer suggestions without citations.

https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/COVID19-HealthProfessional/ doesn't cite any positive results for reducing Long COVID, just studies in progress. :(

New to mastodon. I think this is where I put some '@'s to draw attention? If that's wrong please correct me and I'll delete/repost without.

@zeroes Followup in case anyone wants to know how it's gone:

She's not going to be able to access Paxlovid or Metformin, because BC Public Health has decided that #MassDisabling events are essentially only risky for the immunocompromised now, and her risk of death to acute COVID-19 doesn't cross their threshold.

She and her household are going to try iota carrageenan nasal sprays if they can get some.

They reaffirmed their other in-house isolation protections are in place (ventilation, purification, isolation, masking). I wish they'd do pressure zones.

She said she'll gargle salt water but she might've been humouring me.

Thanks to everyone who so quickly provided citations.

@datum I have no knowledge of paxlovid availability in Canada, sorry. Best wishes for your loved one for a rapid and full recovery.

Something like this?
This is about a year old but I've seen other similar recommendations.

"I have COVID! What should my kids and I take to reduce chances of severe illness and Long COVID?" (Updated 9/14/24)

I get this question a lot. Here is some info that may help adults & children with COVID.

Studies, Surveys, & Supplements
@datum Sorry to hear about the positive test. Each province is different. I’m in Alberta, where it is difficult to qualify. In Ontario, I believe pharmacists can prescribe Paxlovid. Not sure about other provinces. If it’s not possible to get in their province, it might be worth trying to enroll in the CanTreatCOVID study (cantreatcovid.org; if assigned treatment with Paxlovid, participants get the drug free, in 24 hours). The study isn’t in all provinces.

@datum

sympathies!

No archive or paxlovid links, sorry, but here are a couple of guides, for what they're worth:

https://covidtoolbox.com/nasal-inhahers-mouthwash-eyedrops/
evidence on the recommedations for sprays/mouthwash etc seems slight but also that they are probably harmless; most seem to be about reducing viral load, so could be useful as treatment &/or prophylactic.
Some evidence CPC mouthwash reduces viral load, but can also have negative effects, so I wouldn't suggest it for regular use, but after infection, definitely could be worth it.

Oral probiotic S. salivarius K12 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9609702/

probiotics for the gut may also be helpful.

And REST--like, 6-8 weeks of rest.
