A great history lesson on how totally wrong some journalists can be ... and how incredibly resilient fascists are to punishment!

@BrexitBin Tja, so kann man sich irren. Landsberg am Lech ist meine Heimatstadt.
@BrexitBin Well he returned to his birth country and got a warm welcome.

@BrexitBin It's not that long ago I did a newspaper search out of curiosity on how papers covered Hitler before the war, and even though I was aware, seeing firsthand how many papers cheered on things like the Night of the Long Knives because they bought the Nazi narrative hook line and sinker and saw it as Hitler "fixing things" was disturbing.

Here is part of one disgusting widely syndicated US article lionizing Hitler, complete with an early "and then everyone cheered" meme.

@vidar
Thank you, Vidar. The parallels to today are obvious, aren't they? I'm working on a project at the moment about the beginning of German democracy in the 1830s. When you read what was demanded in the speeches then (democracy, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, equal rights, freedom from oppression by a ruling class) you realise that we actually gained a lot of that after the two world wars. But those who lost power then are now trying to get it back.
