Today we have a dead DMG GameBoy on the table. I never have worked on those. And immediately it is obvious that they are VERY different in design from the GBP and the GBC. There are two big PCBs.
#retrogaming #gameboy #dmg01
Oh, this does not look good. The alkaline from the batteries has eaten THROUGH this ceramic cap. on the display PCB. The bad news is: the DMG doesn't even power up with a different, working display PCB. so something must be wrong on the mainboard, or the two supporting PCBs (like the power supply).
The whole construction seems so much more toylike than the GBC or GBP. The chips are all blobs. So no replacing if they are dead...
So, if anyone has any good pointers on how to repair #dmg01 original #GameBoy -- then please! What are those test points on the mainboard? What should I check first? Voltages? Where and how much should they read? Clock signal? etc etc...
Ok, it seems the mainboard still works. So the display PCB is a goner I think, but I would like to do an IPS mod anyway, which seems easy on the DMG, as the whole display PCB gets swapped out.
The flex connector to the display is HEAVILY corroded. The LCD also shows signs of yellowing. I know there are people who refurbish those, but I am not one of them...
@root42 if you’re not already aware of it /r/consolerepair on Reddit tends to be a small but friendly and helpful community for such help ☺️
@root42 Interested in what you find out. I have a DMG that has suffered from battery corrosion. It powers on, but impossible to get a game to boot. So share your findings!
