Just saw someone on YouTube talking about how they've read over 200 books this year. They read the last Series of Unfortunate Events books and Lord of the Rings LAST WEEK. They felt they were being stagnant and lazy because they haven't read anything in a couple of days?!

What in the internalised capitalism is this? Why are we turning reading into a productivity thing? Why are we measuring our hobbies and setting ourselves KPIs??

I'm gonna take things at my own damn place when I'm enjoying myself, thank you very much!

@internetnerdgrl You know, I hear (read) things like that and can't help the healthy (giant) dose of skepticism that says maaaaaybe they're exaggerating just a wee bit. Or outright lying.

People do weird things for attention.

@tarabara I guess they could be inflating the number, I hadn't thought of that! But even then they're still chasing a target in their hobby which they are supposed to do for fun...?? It's weird to me.
@internetnerdgrl Really, really weird. Your original post answers it though: capitalism. Even hobbies are now a task-oriented, competitive, prove-yourself venture.
@tarabara the big boss is capitalism, it is always capitalism...

I can recommend Elysian by @nichorra The City of Last Chances and the House of Open Wounds by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and the Notorious Scarlett and Browne by Jonathan Stroud. My Family and other animals is a bit dated but I find Durrell's love of animals covers a multitude of sins.

@internetnerdgrl Yeah. Reading “challenges” always seemed odd to me. Surely reading isn’t a challenge, but a pleasure.

@internetnerdgrl

I love reading so much. It’s so interesting I can barely contain myself. I’m a sucker for really good content. I spent a number of years not reading actual books it’s been a blessing. I may have read a lot this year. So more like I have been catching up for about 20 years. Maybe longer. Haha 😂 perhaps reading styles and ways, aren’t all the same, because all readers aren’t the same.
Perhaps it’s just a fragmented community I’m not sure.
