@24panels

Think "The Addams Family" has overshadowed "The Munsters" in recent years. Wonder how many people below a certain age would recognize them at this point...

Re: Eddie being a werewolf, maybe he's adopted?

Heh, "Silver Age Munsters." Though there was a revival of the original series (in color) in the late 80s.

"Zombo" was the name of a "clown ghost" haunting an amusement park in "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo".

The "Munster on Munster action" line almost made me spill my coffee...

@24panels

"You know the drill"... gather we've reached the point of apathy at best about social media? 🙂

@dtgeek Pretty much. Twitter is pretty much in its death spiral, most online conversations I have are now on WhatsApp, and God bless Mastodon and BSky, but I don't think they'll ever hit the peaks Twitter did.

As for Facebook: basically only post episode links there now.

@24panels

It's been a year since I stopped posting to Twitter, but I don't miss it. Check in sometimes to search tweets and/or see if former followers have gone elsewhere, but that's it.

Mastodon and BlueSky have somewhat filled the hole, but admit not quite the same. Mostly since the crowds I followed are split between both sites (the tech folk came here, the comic/animation crowd went to BlueSky), and both sites seem to dislike the other...

@24panels ... I still have a Facebook page for my blog, to have at least one token mainstream social network. (Also my personal FB account for my family/online friends who won't use anything else.) Though doesn't get a lot of traffic. My Instagram page is basically dormant, and the AI news about it this week makes me disinclined to start posting photos to it again anytime soon. (Considering my dormant Pixelfed account as a replacement.)
@dtgeek You know, I never used Instagram. Granted, I rarely ever post images (at least of myself), so its appeal never really worked for me.
@24panels same here. My image/photo posting is mostly for holidays, but still thought having a place for posting images would be useful. Though Instagram's usefulness is pretty much zero now: no outside links in posts, algorithms throttling everything, and now the "we'll use your photos for AI" news.

@24panels As for Mastodon/BS: Mastodon seems to dislike BlueSky for: ideological reasons; fear of a repeat of Twitter; a less techie crowd; running its own federated standard; andlacking a lot of features.

Bluesky dislikes Mastodon being harder to use and sign up for; a lack of features like text-based search; harder to find one's friends (per federation); a perceived "stuffier" atmosphere and culture; and scolding about self-promotion, content warnings, etc.

@dtgeek Which is fair on both ends. I completely get the fear of Twitter 2.0, though from a business standpoint I can't seen anyone being eager to follow Musk down the path he's gone.
@24panels part of it's another Elon Musk ruining a site (there's no shortage of racist 1%-ers/fans of same,, unfortunately); part of it's just seeing how much capitalism/wealthy interests in general are degrading stuff (see Cory Doctorow dubbing platform decay with the crude but attention grabbing term "ensh*ttification").
@24panels just in the past week alone we've got "Meta using your photos for AI" and "Sony is deleting paid-for digital videos customers bought for 'reasons'"...
@dtgeek Missed that Sony news!
Sony Pulls Discovery Videos PlayStation Users Already Own, Sparking Concern Over Our Digital Future - IGN

Sony has sparked outrage online after pulling some PlayStation content even from those who bought it.

IGN
@dtgeek Thanks!

@24panels it's sparking discussion again over the nature of DRM in digital media, particularly videos. (AKA "you don't really own 'bought' movies from iTunes/Amazon/etc.")

It's also drawing attention by some to the merits of physical media. Though DVDs/Blu-rays are starting to vanish more and more from stores---Best Buy plans to stop offering them in 2024...

@dtgeek The Digital Bits made a good point about Best Buy and how low their actual sales were that its actual impact on the current market is negligible. Still sucks to lose another place to buy from.

@24panels

A few physical media concerns though: the aforementioned DVD/Bluray availability dwindling; not everything on streaming services is available on physical media (and if so, only on DVD/in standard definition, particularly for TV shows that were made/aired in HD); and people want to watch video on their phones/computers/etc. (which don't have optical drives), and ripping DVDs = an enthusiasts/geek thing apparently (*looks at my Jellyfin server*).

@dtgeek Oh, all good points. I'm just hoping this wakes up everyone up to the need to purchase discs.

@24panels stateside, no more Best Buy leaves Amazon, Target, and Walmart to buy new DVDs from, plus a few regional big box stores. (And a few websites, like Gruv, Shout Factory or Criterion?) Though my last trip to Target showed a smallish selection of DVDs left...

I've been buying DVDs/BRs again this year (WB purging content from Max pushing me to do so), and ripping them to my computer for my own home media server. Though know that's niche/for "techies," nice to have my own "Netflix"...

@dtgeek Oh, it is great to have. Since moving into my place, the media library has been the main thing to get attention to it.
@24panels was using Plex, but switched to Jellyfin recently. Keep my files on an external HD attached to my Mac, while the DVDs/BRs are in storage (I live in a small apartment). Screenshot of the main page:
@dtgeek Already you have 100% more Looney Tunes than Max!
@24panels still also use streaming services. Main development here in that: Disney+ now has a "Hulu" hub for subscribers to both. Basically where the "Star" tile is on non-US Disney+, but with all of Hulu's content under it. (Including, oddly, the non-Disney-owned Hulu content, complete with the ability to browse WB stuff with a "Disney+" banner over it?)
@dtgeek Still have some here. Disney for Doctor Who (come on Christmas Day!), Criterion for deep cut material, and Netflix for... well, some reason.

@24panels heh. Well, Netflix still can work as a "catch-all" service/is still popular?

Yes, Doctor Who's been advertised a lot on Disney+ here too. Figured it'd be a Hulu show here, but guess not.

@dtgeek Disney is directly pumping money into the show (even if they get zero say in the creative side of it), so I suspect Disney wants to keep it from something they only partially own.

@24panels nope--as of a few weeks ago, they now fully own Hulu, after buying out Comcast's share. Thus probably why it's finally been integrated into Disney+ here (a la Star) as of a few days ago.

Re: services, I have: the Disney+ bundle (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+), for the cartoons/sports/as a Netflix replacement/D+ and Hulu seem better together vs buying just one or the other; Paramount+ (though could drop it after football season); and get Peacock for free (via Comcast).

@dtgeek Man, another thing I missed! (Been a busy few weeks)

@24panels Comcast now can use the cash to prop up Peacock, I guess (along with probably jacking up broadband bills)... which outside of WWE fans, Hallmark fans, sports, and "Yellowstone" fans, well, exists? 🙂

As for Hulu's future, guessing it probably stays a stand-alone service, along with the Disney+ integration option...

@dtgeek Most likely. We'll see what becomes of it in a few years time.
@24panels think it's one of the few streaming services that turns a profit. Guessing since it's mostly stuff from cable channels/broadcast networks and a few originals, plus the ad-based tier is what most of its customers use (it's cheap/often comes bundled with other stuff). Still didn't stop Disney from jacking up the price of ad-free Hulu and Disney+ though (to try to get customers to pay for the ad-based tier instead)... 😦
@dtgeek @24panels There's also Days of Our Lives. I have no idea how many people subscribe to Peacock to keep up but I'd guess it's a decent number, at least for Peacock.
@bluegreen118 @dtgeek Soap opera fandom is an area I know little about, but that certainly does track. They are a dedicated bunch.
@dtgeek Ahhh yes, another reason to go for physical media!
