This is not a bad thing. AI NEEDS to be regulated heavily. Otherwise, we see AI apps like ‘Nudify’ that use AI to undress women in photos. Those apps are soaring in popularity and degrading women. Is that what American corporations want? It blows my mind as many on social media defend such apps as freedom of expression or Rule 34. What kind of society encourages such behavior? Aren’t you worried about your daughters and mothers becoming victims of such crimes? I can’t believe it.

‘Nudify’ Apps That Use AI to ‘Undress’ Women in Photos Are Soaring in Popularity

It’s part of a worrying trend of non-consensual “deepfake” pornography being developed and distributed because of advances in artificial intelligence.

@nixCraft I think we're at an inflection point in human history where reasonable regulations require actual reasoning than resorting to common sense. The question is whether the human race (not part of it) is actually ready for such a reasoning.
@nixCraft Very sad commentary on society really...
@nixCraft Also I'm continuously surprised how people are bringing "scientists care about what they can do but not what they should(n't) do" to the extreme. Except not just scientists this time.
@nixCraft
Some people are fucked up.
@nixCraft ... to the surprise of absolutely noone.
@nixCraft the EU is not a continent... 💀
@JungleGeorge24 fair enough but my message still valid
@nixCraft totally 👏 and apologies for being a reply guy 😐

@nixCraft 10000% agree. I hadn’t heard of that app before but that’s absolutely bonkers that it’s somehow legal anywhere.

Then there’s this out of Meta. https://mastodon.online/@davidaugust/111547039519473636

@nixCraft I think regulating AI is the wrong approach, although that's what every one jumps of. We have legal systems that, maybe imperfectly, reflect our values. I'm pretty sure publishing non consensual porn is already illegal, or it should be regardless of it being created by AI or Photoshop.

If you regulate the how and not the what, you run the risk of creating ambiguity, and people getting of, because e.g. a non consensual porn picture cannot be proven to have been made with AI.

Plus, you're always behind.

@nixCraft
I think rather than regulating AI, we should push for things like "no unconsensual porn" or any kind. I have given up on the idea that regulators will keep up with technology, so it's better if they just pushed for laws that they actually understand. Actually, how in the world do existing laws not already ban such behaviour?

This approach may also future proof certain things, like if some new potentially harmful tech becomes popular, it's already regulated at least to an extent.

@enthusiast101 @nixCraft Fully agree. And "regulating AI" will not make this usage go away. Like, I am fairly sure, if I am in the EU and want to use this, I am able to do that.
There might be a case where every place on earth actually agrees on a set of rules, but neither do I think that's likely nor will that eliminate the issue, it just makes it harder.

I thought the USA in particular is always fast with saying that the prohibition didn't work, so making anything illegal won't work.

@nixCraft the EU is not a continent 😉
@nixCraft corporations don't give a damn about ppl, it's money that matters.
@nixCraft I’m not sure that we’ll ever legislate out of existence men’s sense of entitlement to women’s bodies, but we can legislate AI. Call me a Luddite but I don’t see what benefits could come from AI that could possibly be worth all the harms in the present. Increased productivity has not meant less work. Just because some Silicon Valley assholes call it “progress” and make billions on it doesn’t mean it’s at all useful to the rest of us — see crypto and self-driving cars as prior examples.
@nixCraft Totally agree, but when it comes to making money, there seem to be NO borders... But it is the people's decision - if people do not abolish Amazon - then it is their decision, which shows that humans are both malignant in the very core, and stupid (there are exceptions of course, otherwise YOU wouldn't have posted this...).
One can be both decent and modern of course, but narrow-mindedness, and double (triple, ...) standards in ethics & society are to be found more often, sadly...
