"Class relations within party organizations shape and set clear limits on the involvement of working-class activists."

Subordinate activists come up against elitist structures that prevent them from accessing positions of responsibility: they are and will remain “mere activists”.

'“Good” activism generally involves exhibiting “cultural goodwill,” talking about politics with a high degree of abstraction and self-restraint, attending large anonymous meetings on national issues, and organizing one’s time in such a way as to be available for activist activity. These traits run counter to the circumstantial, more occasional, practical, and local engagement of working-class activists.'

Have you come across Rosenthal's "Professional Poison"?

https://remarxpub.com/professional-poison/

Hey @BillySmith
Thank you for pointing it out!
Now I am looking it up 😄

@estelle

I heard about it via the Disciplined Minds website:

https://web.archive.org/web/20230828074535/https://disciplinedminds.tripod.com/

It's the same controlling behaviour expressed as the self-policing aspect of "professionalism".

It's just another low-energy-state feedback node.

Useful from the perspective of group survival, but limited in it's usefulness, as it's difficult to move from there to any higher-energy-state nodes.

Same problem with most evolved systems. :D

@BillySmith
In the sociology of organizations, i have found this text which might interest you: https://susanrosenthal.com/strategies/pain-on-the-one-side-fear-on-the-other-retaining-members-in-socialist-organization/

... by the same Susan Rosenthal.

From my perspective, the article shows a narrow society view: it is as if she only considered US Whites. It feels alien to me 🤦🏾‍♀️
