Your daily reminder that an immigrant shouldn’t have to carry out heroic acts to justify their existence or to be deserving of the same rights, privileges, and dignity that you enjoy as someone who just happened to be born where you live.
@aral Also a major reminder that, regardless of whether or not we do anything that gets us recognised as a "good person," we're almost always sitting on the brink of precarity because of some whimsical decision of a migration official or an absurd change to migration policy or a pointless missing document or... Whatever the rules are, it often feels like we're just shy of getting screwed by them and losing our home.
@aral but ... but many times these immigrants are not white! Rights are for whites!
@aral Immigrant here and I 100% agree with this.
@aral I'm always surprised when this isn't the default way someone sees it.
@aral @hembrow To be honest delivering food in all weathers is already heroic.
@aral and further still: we must work to build a world in which the notion of passports and borders don't exist. Death to xenophobia everywhere!
@aral If you are talking about US, always remember it is land of the immigrants and that’s why US is US.
@aral Yeah, I hate it when (closet) neonazis say to an immigrant that they count as a friend that they may stay, because they are different. As if an immigrant needs to prove themselves. Talk about privilege.
@aral yes. Neither do they need to be apologetic for anything.
@aral Yebbut in Ireland this week we're still grateful for the Brazilian dude and the French teenager who helped disarm the Irish-Algerian knife-attacker.
@aral We are all intermixed races and all immigrants. This is my DNA breakdown.
