Some years back my dad gave me a pair of vintage (1970s) Ohm L speakers that his dad originally gave him. I havenโ€™t been able to listen to them because the foam/rubber around the woofers has entirely disintegrated.

I... I had no idea you could just... replace the foam.

Tbf, my dad thought the woofers were entirely shot, but at this point I don't think he knows what he's talking about.

I'll call a local shop tomorrow for a quote. If it's pricy I'm willing to give the $27 DIY kit a shot.

@Dylan I donโ€™t know the brand, but those look like pretty nice speakers, and 3-way too, by the looks of it.

As for the woofer being shot, my guess is that if they pass the โ€œpush testโ€, theyโ€™re not shot โ€” push in slightly and let go to see if they move freely. If you feel grating, the magnet has probably shifted.

Generally speaking, the tweeter, not the woofer, is what fails, which happens if a speaker is pushed too hard with inadequate amplification.

Ohm is such a cool brand. Been around since the early โ€˜70s and based in Brooklyn, NY. They're warehouse direct and build every single speaker locally. The president of the company personally inspects and listens to nearly every pair -- and he's known to answer the phones & respond to emails regularly.

AFAIK my speakers were always handled with care. I think the foam/rubber simply disintegrated due to old age. They're nearly 50 years old! Circa โ€˜76, I think.

I've definitely got the equipment to drive this pair and more. I can't remember the numbers offhand, but my receiver/amp is quite powerful.

Ohm's Walsh speakers are known to be some of the best in the world. They can be placed out-front or right up next to a wall. They provide incredible room-filling sound thatโ€™s got a huge "sweet spot.โ€ They describe the sweet spot as being a square relative to the speakers, rather than the typical equilateral triangle. Eventual endgame for me.

@Dylan I donโ€™t have time to pursue that hobby currently. I just canโ€™t sit down and listen the way I used to, so I mostly use my HomePod (gen 1), and since I only have one, itโ€™s not even stereo! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I used to have a pair of #Cabasse in exotic bubinga wood. They were fabulous. I left them with a friend years ago. The brand belongs to Canon now, and very niche.

Iโ€™ll go to a proper listening room before deciding on my next pair. Who knows when that will happen. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@ZeKik
I love my HomePods and they sound really good as a stereo pair. Very spacious.

Yours were quite a unique pair of speakers to part with, but theyโ€™re merely things at the end of the day. Though I say that and I currently have four speaker setups in my room.

And btw, I checked my receiver. It's an Onkyo TX-8511. 100W/channel and it can switch between 4 and 8 ohms. Should be plenty of power for my bedroom.
