I check in with my cards regularly, especially before working with a deck for a collective reading.

After pulling a few cards from The Unknown Tarot, it was clear that it’s ready to be put to bed for the year. Most of my favorite decks for collective readings are otherwise engaged right now, but I wasn’t worried about finding a volunteer for the week. And I have a new deck that I’ve been eager to work with, and I was pretty sure it’d be perfect. But nope. 1/

During the interview reading, it basically said, “Now don’t get your feelings hurt, but I’m going to need you to put me straight back in the box. We can work together later, and you’ll know when.”

My feelings were a little hurt, but I put it back in the box and returned it to the shelf. 2/

I have another new deck, but it’s one I haven’t been “sure” about. It’s been put together a little differently, and many of the cards have meanings that depart from the RWS & Thoth decks.

More importantly, the people in the images do not reflect the diversity found in our population, and that always disappoints me. 3/

However, they’ve deliberately used old drawings that have come down through continental European traditions to illustrate the deck. The drawings appealed to me immediately when I saw them and were the reason I bought the deck.

So basically, I love the drawings (each one individually) AND (when assessed as a whole) I’m not sure about these drawings. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the decision the creators made here. 4/

There’s a small diviner’s guide (little white book) and a much longer guide that will take some time to read that I haven’t finished yet. So the jury’s still out. But the cards won me over for this week’s reading through the interview process and follow up questions.

The cards (all my decks) were interesting tonight, friends. They really were.

I’ll post the cards for the week tomorrow afternoon as usual. For now, bed. /5
