Good bye, Windows. Hello, Kubuntu 23.10!

Might actually have a use for my Surface Pro 3 now 😅

I switched over to using #Wayland and, while something things are smoother and HiDPI is handled better, there are still hitches and some graphical artifacts that pop up.

Nothing can resolve the issue with the meh typing and trackpad experience of the type cover; especially, when compared to any of my MacBook Pros. It's serviceable, but I would probably end up using an external keyboard and trackball if it were my daily driver.

Testing out the kitty terminal emulator as Konsole feels like a step backwards compared to iTerm2 on macOS.

I've installed VS Code, but haven't set up my development environment yet.

@qlp totally agree with how shitty the trackpad is. Curious what your issue is with the keyboard?

@aes__ It's the bounce and flex, even when typing on a desk. Worse when not (like using it on a lap).

Also, they key spacing and placement means that I end up hitting 0 (zero) instead of - (hyphen) or vice versa more than on any other laptop keyboard. Don't get me started on the Fn key being to the right of the left Ctrl key. I'm so used to it being the other way around.

@qlp What's the issue with Konsole?

I had the completely opposite experience yesterday. I m a long time Konsole user and installed Kitty to uninstall it back a few minutes later.

@yuce iTerm provides an option to use either built-in Powerline glyphs or define a secondary font for things that fall outside of the usual text. I couldn't seem to find a way to handle that in Konsole.

I'm about to give up on Kitty as the configuration is simply bananas.

@qlp I would recommend moving to Wayland for those HiDPI displays.
@ahoneybun Wayland has been very hit or miss on the hardware that I have and I find that I go back to X for stability and smoothness. It may be better on more recent hardware and graphics, but definitely not on the relatively ancient stuff I have for tertiary machines.
@qlp Wayland has been good on NVIDIA and even better on Intel and AMD.
@ahoneybun It's been better on my XPS 13 with a 6th Gen Core processor. But, tried Wayland on a system of the similar gen as my Surface Pro 3, it was hitch-y. I'll mess around with it later when I have cycles to see if it's improved with the newer distro and kernel.
@ahoneybun Since I have limited space on this device, I opted for Kubuntu as I wanted to use KDE Plasma without having to install it along side another desktop environment. Otherwise, I'd be running Pop on the device (love it on my older XPS 13).
@qlp I have a special love for Plasma and Kubuntu even with COSMIC and Pop out there! So no judgement!

@ahoneybun The window management of COSMIC is the reason why I love it to bits. That said, after using KDE Plasma on my Steam Deck, I grew to like it a bit more.

By the way, I did switch over to Wayland and it runs a bit smoother than plain X. There are still some random graphical glitches, artifacts, and hitches when things load in or are moved around.

Glad that I finally ditched Windows on it.

@qlp COSMIC DE when it is released is going to take that to level 11! Tiling is just built in from the ground up rather than an Extension like it currently is.
@ahoneybun Looking forward to the release!
