#Salvador Dalí is a Spanish painter with a first #Surrealist period that lost importance after 1950.
to aim to turn his canvases into an exploration of space and time.
The image is "Christ of Saint John of the Cross",an oil on canvas painted in 1951.
Although the crucifixion is one of the motifs of #Art in #Spain,
this painting has two interesting characteristics: the perspective and that the crucified man is devoid of the signs of the #Passion. I'll tell you a little more about this.
Regarding to #Dalí's oil on canvas,in general the representations of the crucified #Christ are made at the foot of the cross or from a point that shows the crucified person from the front.
#Spain has given two genres to universal literature: the #picaresque and the Christian #Mysticism during our Golden Age. Dalí's painting is based on a drawing attributed to
San Juan de la Cruz,a Spanish mystic and Carmelite #Friar
This prevented the painting from being censored by the Catholic Church in #Spain
In #Spain,#Catholic religion is taught as a subject in our schools and HighSchools.I was taught that symbol of Christians is an empty cross coz e although Christ was taken down from cross, empty cross represents that Christ died and rose again. When I grew up I discovered that Spanish Catholics consider Christ crucified, crowned with thorns, bleeding by his sores and writhing in pain, symbol of their faith. Dalí's painting is halfway between the two visions.
U can see it in #Figueres until April 30.
