CBC: ““It doesn’t appear that she was adopted in any way, shape or form,” [Stoneham Town clerk Maria Sagarino] said. She said if Sainte-Marie had truly been adopted from Saskatchewan, the file would contain her legal adoption records and proof she entered the United States.
Instead, her file only contains an original Stoneham birth certificate.”

Who is the real Buffy Sainte-Marie?

Buffy Sainte-Marie’s claims to Indigenous ancestry are being contradicted by members of the iconic singer-songwriter's own family and an extensive CBC investigation.

@chris Today’s reporting was the first time I’ve heard of her, so I’m not really sure what to think.

As a white trans lady, I can deeply empathize with found family transforming your identity, and it’s not my place to tell a First Nation who to accept as their own.

On the other hand, it‘s troubling that she appears to have misrepresented specific life details in a way that obscures the truth about Canada’s mistreatment of Indigenous people.

@chris I voted “sad” because her many accomplishments are now marred with apparent subterfuge and possible appropriation. She is Cree, but was she born Cree? Does it matter? I’m not convinced that it does. There are competing Indigenous voices - some opposed and some in support. But I am white and privileged and it is not my place to pass judgment. We humans are imperfect and can make mistakes. Im reminded of the saying: “A rising tide floats all boats.” It may apply here?
