Sure, the Supreme Court needs better ethics rules. But Clarence Thomas took bribes and cheated on his taxes, and existing laws cover that nicely.

Justice Thomas’s R.V. Loan Was Forgiven, Senate Inquiry Finds

The justice failed to repay much, perhaps all, of the $267,230 loan. His benefactor wiped the slate clean, with ethical and potential tax consequences.

#ClarenceThomas needs to be investigated, and if evidence is as it seems, prosecuted.

The RV used by Clarence 'I'm just a regular guy who likes to RV' Thomas was just another gift.

You have to wonder at the audacity of being gifted an expensive RV in exchange for your vote (of 9 possible) and then using the RV as a prop to project an image of you as just a regular guy.

@JamesGleick even if treated as an outright gift it then means he failed to declare it as he should have done. But he's already made the claim it was a loan... so which is it Thomas?
@JamesGleick when TF is anyone going to start playing hardball with these ppl? they send letters, they do their investigations, and nothing happens
@JamesGleick Why would Clarence Thomas ever believe he will be held to account for anything when the sitting President of the United States allowed him to skate when he was accused of sexual harassment during his confirmation?
@JamesGleick If you think a modern day US Justice would be arrested for *checks several pages of my clipboard* a crime... any crime at all... you're going to be disappointed.

I'm reading "Prequel" by Rachel Maddow.

In the very first pages, the book describes the enormous transfers of German money to various collaborators in the prelude to a rising anti-democracy movement.

Same thing here. Enormous outlays of cash to a Supreme Court Justice from anti-democracy billionaires.

@Npars01
How similar is the book to the ULTRA podcast?

@CassandraVert

The book offers more details.

@JamesGleick The thing is, even with a lack of ethics laws for the Supreme Court, tax evasion is tax evasion and he can be gotten on that.
@JamesGleick On the day of yet another horrific mass shooting, this time in Lewiston Maine, a reminder that the nonsensical SCOTUS Bruen decision was authored by Thomas. He is corrupt to the very core and scourge on American society.
@JamesGleick We tend to think that someone like this would be embarrassed into resigning, or otherwise “doing the right thing”. Not going to happen. His conscience is too seared. The only recourse is charging him with a crime. Who could do that? Elliot Ness? This guy has a lot of billionaire friends who own a lot of politicians. I wonder if we the people could start a class action lawsuit (for something). That approach wouldn’t require a DA to gamble their whole career.

@obviousdwest @JamesGleick
I agree that this dude is pot-committed and deeply angry at a system that deemed him not a fit, so he’ll go down fighting it, throwing sand in the gears as he does it.

It’s all about the bruised ego.

@JamesGleick

> and existing laws cover that nicely.

Do they? Per the news reports loan was forgiven 15 years ago. When he filed his 2008 taxes that was likely 14.5 years ago. What's the statute of limitations on this?
