The difference between Wikipedia and Twitter is that Wikipedia is intentionally a non-profit.
@MissingThePt i dont think elon musk knows how servers work
@Chalkllate @MissingThePt
I read about how he migrated a data center and I must agree here.

@RnDanger @Chalkllate @MissingThePt ouch!!!

He obviously never learned change management.

@Chalkllate @MissingThePt you tell them what you want to eat, and they bring it to you. It’s simple!
@Chalkllate @MissingThePt I don't think he understands the concept of "work", in any of its definitions. As far as he's concerned, if one of his ludicrous ideas doesn't happen it's because someone was lazy, sabotaged it, or otherwise failed him. I'd be willing to bet that the only reason there isn't public floggings at any of his companies is that some genius minder of his managed to convince him it was illegal.
@MissingThePt Have you ever wondered why libraries want so much money? It certainly isn't needed to lend books. You can literally borrow a copy of any book from them for free!
@MissingThePt They’re gunning for Wikipedia next. I’ve been dreading this day. This is the beginning of whatever it is they’ll do to destroy it.
@MissingThePt community notes 📈📈📈, we gotta add that 📢📢📢.
@MissingThePt I'm gonna have to unfollow soon as you are getting the point bullseye, I came here to learn how to miss the point
@MissingThePt also i thought twitter was a for-profit company, unless i'm missing the point.
@dam_bro @MissingThePt Do you want someone to explain the joke to you?
@dam_bro
I think the joke is that twitter isnt making profit at all under musks management.
@dam_bro @MissingThePt Twitter is nominally a for profit company, however they are making a massive loss because of Elon Musk
@MissingThePt He's such a troll and total d-bag.

@MissingThePt Imagine Musk pretending that a fact based site is in some way sinister and not to be trusted.

I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

@MissingThePt
I'm just waiting for the next Starship orbital launch with no flame diverter and a weak excuse for a deluge system. NASA and the FAA won't wise up until somebody dies.

@MissingThePt

Glad to see there was no steel or dust blown around. Would like to see the condition of the launch structure.

@MissingThePt he has a point. They claimed they wanted to build an endowment that would allow them to run without more fund raising. They have enough cash to do so, but have chosen to raise more money. They haven't explained why (to my best knowledge).

@MissingThePt

Mad he can't buy it and break it too.

@futurebird @MissingThePt He must hate Tesla's Wikipedia page where it states he was only allowed to call himself a co-founder through a lawsuit settlement.
@futurebird @MissingThePt i kinda think every dumb tweet like this has a non-public backstory, and i like the theory that he tried to buy wikipedia but they turned him down and he got mad and rage tweeted this
@MissingThePt Actually, Wikipedia has been caught several years in a row just... sitting on money that should've been used to hire curators. Musk is an idiot and missing the point, but Wikipedia really is weird for always asking for money despite not utilizing it.
@Cher @MissingThePt What do you mean, "should've been used"? If you think that because it's a non-profit, Wikipedia has to use all the money it receives during the year, you're wrong: their current strategy is to keep at least 4 months of cash reserves, which can be used if things go wrong. And if you look at their annual statement, you'll also see that the money they spent on salaries increased by 30% between 2021 and 2022, so it's not like they aren't using it either.
@MissingThePt I am surprised that Elon hasn't forbidden X users from adding context to his posts. I guess that is coming.

@MissingThePt

You know, since I've edited so many articles I always felt annoyed about donating too. But, I think I'll do a monthly donation to the Wikipedia.

It would suck if it weren't around. Problems and all.

@MissingThePt he tries so hard, but he's a pizza cutter...all edge and no point.
@MissingThePt thx musk for my yearly reminder why I donate to the internet archive and Wikipedia
@MissingThePt Guess Elon is annoyed that his article isn't a hagiography!

@MissingThePt A broken clock is correct twice a day. There is a genuine issue here. WP is sitting on nearly 270 million in cash and yet it is continually begging for money.

https://www.dailydot.com/debug/wikipedia-endownemnt-fundraising/

Wikipedia is swimming in money—why is it begging people to donate?

The site is way richer than it wants you to know.

The Daily Dot
@Oozenet @MissingThePt donations would be for overhead, but infrastructure changes do require mass capital. With the size and reach wiki has, even a small project would require mass funds injection. I’m not fussed about the money; at least we know about it and it’s not squirrelled away on some island somewhere.
@luvadergolder @MissingThePt I sincerely hope no squirreling is being done, but there are gaps in the financials, as that essay explains.
@Oozenet @MissingThePt

Yes, that's how endowments work. You have a big pile of money and you don't touch the principle. You throw that pile in a low-risk/low-yield fund and take a fraction of the annual earnings as usable money while the rest gets added to the pile. It's currently the best system for trying to maintain an organization over the long term.

Don't listen to crap written by a guy who used to be a big Wikipedia editor who got the boot after whining about wokeness rotted his brain.

@Oozenet @MissingThePt Well, there's always the risk of something going wrong. Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia sites are a big element of the modern-day internet, almost like a community library. I would prefer that they have the funds to go months, years even, without any income. I'd prefer that before they begin serving targeted ads and invading privacy.

Besides, most readers don't give, and those that do give within what's feasible. The Wikimedia Foundation is not forcing you to pay.

@Oozenet @MissingThePt That said, though, there is the issue of runaway spending which I found out about in a community essay here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Guy_Macon/Wikipedia_has_Cancer

And I'd rather these reserves not be eaten up by unnecessary employees and cause the encyclopedia to collapse should donations come to a halt

User:Guy Macon/Wikipedia has Cancer - Wikipedia

@MissingThePt does this guy not understand the overhead of any of his own businesses? Like Jesus christ, he's gotta be acting intentionally obtuse right?
@Slipp well, he doesn't pay for lots of them.
@MissingThePt he continues to prove the level to which someone can actually be an idiot despite being lucky enough to have made a lot of money…
@MissingThePt I donate every year to the Wikimedia Foundation. In contrast, I give $0 to TWFKAT.
@MissingThePt Elon Musk was a genius until he bought Xitter. He literally invented electric and space. Or something.

@MissingThePt And, has been pointed out, ad infinitum...they publish their financials online, for the world to see.

It's different.

@MissingThePt why doesn't it surprise me that #spacekaren doesn't understand the basics of running a website.
@MissingThePt He just needs to start adding "Sad!" to the end of his posts and the transformation will be complete.
@MissingThePt ow. My head hurts from the stupid.
@MissingThePt , I wonder how Elon is going to recruit engineers for Tezla and rocket scientists for ZpaceX when he hates facts and science so much? Obviously he doesn't like Wikipedia as it is a platform where he cannot dictate what the "truth" is.
@MissingThePt I'm not totally convinced Twitter isn't intentionally tanking either. It's hard to be _that_ incompetent at running something, but if you're trying to run the thing into the ground, it would look a lot like it does.
