NORTH DAKOTA'S ONLY WILD HORSE HERD IS IN DANGER

The wild horses who call #NorthDakota 's Theodore Roosevelt National Park (#TRNP) home are in serious danger.

The National Park Service (#NPS) is currently seeking public input on the Draft Environmental Assessment for a proposed plan that could lead to the complete elimination of this historic #herd, the ONLY wild horse herd in the state.

Currently, the park is home to approximately 195 #WildHorses.

The #TeddyRoosevelt horses have roamed the badlands for centuries, and many believe they are descendants of #SittingBull 's horses and related to the rare #Nokota breed. They are a significant part of the historical and natural #heritage of the park, but the NPS' proposed plan threatens to wipe them out.

During the scoping period, 19,000 public comments were submitted, with the majority calling on the #NPS to maintain a genetically viable herd of at least 150 horses in the #TRNP –

but the #NPS rejected these requests.

The #agency 's plan instead proposes three alternatives that would lead to the complete #destruction of this iconic herd:

β€’ Limiting the herd to an unsustainable and unscientific 35-60 #WildHorses, requiring the removal of about 150 horses;

β€’ Reducing the #population of the herd to zero in a phased approach;

β€’ Or even expediting the reduction of the herd to zero. We can't stress how devastating this would be if allowed to happen.

The Teddy Roosevelt wild horses need a better solution. Please join us in calling for the NPS to abandon these disastrous plans and speak up for this historic herd today!

Thank you for the attention/actions to take on this issue.

Depts of Interior and BLM are waging war on our iconic wild horses - all so welfare ranchers can graze their livestock on our public lands.

Criminal and shameful. πŸ’”πŸ€¬πŸ’”

@504DR definitely! Thank you for being involved in this, too. What a shame that the NPR didn't consider the comments and that now the only herd in all of North Dakota is in danger. I'm lacking the right words for this atrocity and can only hope for the best 🐴

@anna_lillith This sounds absurd by the NPS. What is their reason behind this? Does it cost them money? Are the horses a danger to other animals?

Just imagine the NPS would propose the same for the Bison in Yellowstone?

And why ask for public opinion/input if they clearly had no desire to listen and adjust?
