#socialmedia was a voice for average people. A way that information & #news got out around the tight fisted control of #billionaires who owned the #monoplies of the #media
#localnews #independentnews has been strangled now they have crushed all social media messaging and brought it under the #oligarchs
We are screwed

@voron

We mostly agree. But we are holding out hope that Mastodon, or something similar, will prosper and play that role -- better than Twitter ever did.

In addition to hope, we're doing what we can to make it work.

#Newstodon #Mastodon

@MAD_democracy @voron

I agree with both of you, but would add that it's unrealistic to think that the fediverse (can we please stop calling it Mastodon) is just going to catch on with average people. Something has to act as a draw. Most folks just don't care about oligarchs and billionaires and expect them to own everything now anyway. We need a reason why everyone needs at least a minimal presence here. Given that core impetus, it's likely to grow rapidly from there.

@shoq @voron

#fediverse, ok.

Yes, clearly the platform has to provide something people want.

Need not be everyone but a critical mass that goes beyond the current devotees.

There is something of a chicken and egg problem. Journalists aren't here because their readers aren't, and vice versa.

@shoq @MAD_democracy individuals with power have to lead.
Those with a following by definition can lead if they chose to.

@voron @MAD_democracy

Yes but they’re exactly the ones we have to lure. Everyone else is easy because most follow the herd

@MAD_democracy @shoq that’s backwards thinking. Followers never lure leaders, it’s the other way around, always has been always will be.
Our leaders are failing us.
@voron @MAD_democracy I don’t believe he said they do. He was saying that those who HAVE a following must lead. And I was saying that those crowd-magnet influencers are the ones we must attract. At least, if the goal is mass market acceptance of the fedi (which I am skeptical will ever happen if the expectation for them is a twitter-like experience. I don’t think it has to be that to be successful in a different way.
@shoq @MAD_democracy perhaps it’s simply a matter of talking past one another.
I think we only need a few people who have a large following to embrace the fediverse and become active on it.
That may be what you mean by “attract”, where what I am hearing is that large numbers of people must change their behavior to cajole a few people to use their influence on large numbers of people…which never works
@shoq @MAD_democracy @voron build it and they will come, maybe slowly, there's a lot of inertia in the Xitter world, but eventually it will percolate to those with at least half a brain cell. As for the rest, don't fret too much 😹
