We mostly agree. But we are holding out hope that Mastodon, or something similar, will prosper and play that role -- better than Twitter ever did.
In addition to hope, we're doing what we can to make it work.
I agree with both of you, but would add that it's unrealistic to think that the fediverse (can we please stop calling it Mastodon) is just going to catch on with average people. Something has to act as a draw. Most folks just don't care about oligarchs and billionaires and expect them to own everything now anyway. We need a reason why everyone needs at least a minimal presence here. Given that core impetus, it's likely to grow rapidly from there.

Need not be everyone but a critical mass that goes beyond the current devotees.
There is something of a chicken and egg problem. Journalists aren't here because their readers aren't, and vice versa.
