HS2 cost about 100 billion and, as it stands, still won't get you from the centre of London to the centre of Birmingham any faster than you could do so by train 40 years ago.

Just imagine if they'd just spent one tenth of the HS2 budget on new rolling stock and line maintenance on the London - Birmingham - Manchester route.

It would have been faster to deliver, giving more frequent departures and preserved habitats and homes razed in the HS2 route.

HS2 is not about speed, it is about capacity. Local trains are very limited when they have to share a track with fast trains. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/hs2-logistics-financial-benefit-controversy-a8937936.html
