Car sales in oil & gas country Norway.
Battery electric cars take a market share of 83%, so far this year. Gasoline and diesel down to 4% together.
@Sustainable2050
Does anyone know, what the Government Messaging is around this transition? Have they spent money on promoting EVs. Has there been an educational journey they have taken citizens on the persuade them to buy EVs or has this been achieved through other means?
@MrLee @Sustainable2050 It is not allowed to buy new petrol or diesel cars by 2025. This signal led to this change. Normally people adapt to regulations before they start.

Ehem! ABBA are _Swedish_.

Also, since that article was published, many (but not all) advantages have been reduced and a few removed. Taxation increased as of 1.1.2023, which lead to a huge buying spree for EV's in 2022 and now has resulted in a naturally very slow market with EV's on sale and certain brands struggling to sell their inventory.

@Sustainable2050 the result of some substantial government subsidies/tax breaks, investment in infrastructure etc. Good list of measures here https://elbil.no/english/norwegian-ev-policy/

@Sustainable2050 this is so inspiring! If Norway can do it, so can the rest of Europe - it’s a big, sparsely populated country with harsh weather conditions at least part of the year. So, fellow Germans, what’s your excuse?
@Sustainable2050 beter nog: het waren maar 240 puur ICE auto's afgelopen maand. Tesla alleen verkoopt 10x zoveel auto's... @cejjacobs @Sustainable2050

I really don't get why anyone would buy a Musk-mobile these days.

@Sustainable2050 so why tf is the Norwegian state funding the new North Sea #Rosebank oil field?

@Sustainable2050

Wow! It looks like it only took about 9 years to go from 95% gas/diesel passenger cars sold, to less than 10% gas/diesel passenger cars sold. That is incredible. To what policies or causes do you attribute this?

@chargrille @Sustainable2050 increased taxes on gasoline and diesel cars. Lower taxes on EV cars. High state sponsored subsidies on EV cars. Ban and even higher taxes on gasoline and diesel cars in the near future.
@Sustainable2050 Here in the UK I've seen a lot of FUD around EVs, particularly range anxiety. Yet Norway is larger and much more sparsely populated. Its odd how these things work out, I wonder what the cause for differences of opinion is.

@LonM @Sustainable2050

If you are going more than the charged reach of your vehicle, you do have to plan your route to where there are chances to charge.

That said, charging stations are spread out quite well.
https://ladekart.elbil.no/welcome

Many do have a second car (or access to one) for longer trips. And I can't remember hearing of anyone using their EV on a European holiday.

@Sustainable2050 Do I read this correctly? Sales of cars have dropped to 1/5 from what they used to be in 2010?

@Sustainable2050
Less than 10 years from now, it will suddenly become very hard to fuel fossil cars in Norway.

Hope the rest of us follow soon!

@Sustainable2050

My take from that graph is not that people have started buying EV en masse, they've quit buying new cars altogether.

I would be curious to see the same chart, but for used cars. Pretty sure it runs reverse to this one, with diesel and gas cars close to 100%.

Unless Norway invested massively in public transportation, people are still buying cars. I'm sure there's a 10x increase on imports of used cars from neighboring countries.

Net gain for the climate: close to zero...

@axnxcamr @Sustainable2050

Actually, Norwegian used-car-dealers are now exporting used cars to Eastern Europe!

The 2022 boom for EVs was because the government started charging VAT for them from 1.1.2023.

@MaryPot

People buy 1/5th the new cars they used to buy, and from what you say, they do not buy used car either.

How are they getting around?

I mean, unless they all went public transit, they still have to move around on their own!

Trains? Bikes? ...Uber!? 😂

@Sustainable2050

@axnxcamr @Sustainable2050

Norwegians aren't buying much new or used anything these days. We have over 100,000 families lining up at private charities to get food for their tables - and the charities are running out of food before they can give to everyone in line.

Norway has over 10% of the population under the poverty line! Most are on state pensions.

The government has tanked NOK, so imports are expensive.

And yet the central bank increased the interest rate.

We can afford little.

@MaryPot

😔

So the chart presented as a victory over oil companies and a win for the climate is merely a proof of a population reaping the rewards of enduring capitalism...

@Sustainable2050

@axnxcamr @Sustainable2050

Just like Canada, eh?

@MaryPot

Yes! As usual, we are late to the party, but homelessness is on the rise, food banks are empty, prices of food and housing are rising rapidly... our slide to the right is going very well, our government is investing in oil production more than ever!

We have a bright future in front of us! Short, but bright!

@Sustainable2050

@axnxcamr @Sustainable2050

Hard to find ethical politicians,, let alone ones that want the best for their country instead of just for themselves... .just about everywhere.

😢

@Sustainable2050 @Setok just got a €60 toll bill for a Oslo-Lillehammer-Oslo round trip (185km each way). If you price out poor people from using a car, the rest will overwhelmingly choose EVs. Who knew!
