This is how our government has been corrupted:

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office.

2) Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor.

3) Donors make a huge profit.

4) Repeat.

For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.

I would love to see every campaign 100% government-funded, with strict accounting requirements and strict spending limits for each candidate. No fundraising events or donations from individuals or PACs allowed.
That means we (taxpayers) pay for candidate races, acknowledging campaigns cost money to run, but we get to know how and where campaign dollars are spent.
Also, networks, to keep their broadcast licenses, must host debates at cost (crew pay), no ads.

Also, candidates must qualify to run:
1. pass a civics test with at least 90% correct answers (results made public)
2. background check with felonies being disqualifying, details of background check made public (prospective candidate given oportunity to correct record or withdraw before results made public)
3. furnish 3 references from people who've known them for at least 5 years (interviews of references become part of background check)

@rbreich Have the Election Commission provide the funding for campaigns, a fixed amount for each candidate in a given race, then make *all* campaign donations illegal. It seems like an obvious solution, but I always get pushback from normal, everyday people when I suggest it, claiming that they don't want their tax dollars going to fund candidates they don't like. I never know how to argue against such short-sightedness.
