Today is "International Celebrate Bisexuality Day"!

also sometimes known as "Bi Visibility Day".

also nicknamed by me "stop erasing bi people day", as choices to erase us are what create the so-called bi invisibility!

I plan to share a few posts in honour of the day :-)

so to kick off, here is one with my little rant on that:

Stop Erasing Bi People Day

Recognising the work of making ourselves "visible" in the face of bi erasure.

"Bisexuality: integrated, stable, peaceful"

Reflections on metaphors for bisexuality. Why do so many of them include ideas of movement and fluidity, when for me, bisexuality is about belonging from the start on all the territory there is, and not having to worry about it any more?

I'm not moving - I arrived already :-)

More for International Celebrate Bisexuality Day...

For people who like video, here's a cheerful little celebratory speech by me from 2015.

"Visibility and celebration"

Under 7 minutes, including a snippet of @SingleBass music at the end, from the song "Neither".

Another video resource for International Celebrate Bisexuality Day: a bisexuality information talk which I gave for London's LGBT Switchboard at the end of 2021.

If you run any kind of LGBT organisation, and want to be more friendly to bi people, this would be a good resource to bookmark! and have available for sharing with your staff and volunteers.

23 mins long. The blog post says a bit more about what it includes.

"Three levels of bi erasure"

It's my attempt to put into "ordinary language" some of Kenji Yoshino's very useful analytical essay, "The Epistemic Contract of Bi Erasure".

Featuring a little cartoon by me, where the bi stick-person comes out to their somewhat judgemental stick-person friend :-)

Oh and one more useful tag for this thread: #BiVisibilityDay!

Three levels of bi erasure

An attempt to put into everyday language some ideas from Kenji Yoshino's excellent essay The epistemic contract of bisexual erasure (PDF).

Continuing the bi theme for the day...

"Bi identity: obstacles and paths"

It's a talk I did back in 2006. I didn't have my blog yet, but I _had_ figured out how to make illustrations in some kind of graphics program :-)

"No-one really knows how many bisexual people there are in the world. But what we _do_ know is that lots of bisexual behaviour goes on without the people ever calling themselves bi."

Bi identity: obstacles and paths

How I'd closed that talk was with a quote from a poem by Ann Decter, which I'd found in the bi women's anthology Plural Desires:

Straight, bent, curved.

How you fight not to betray yourself.

To be exactly who you are and make the definitions fit you, not vice-versa.

(I highly recommend that book as well by the way)
