Streaming platform executives:
“I don’t think enough people are pirating. Let’s see what we can do about that.”
@sezduck because Amazon isn't making enough money /s
@SometimesIGetBored @sezduck

companies need to show growth to keep shareholders
@sezduck remember not so long ago when people wanted to stop paying for cable and stream only?
@cadenceoflife @sezduck yeah, I'm rethinking that.
@Livelaughlovecraft @cadenceoflife @sezduck Same here, especially when you factor in the cost of getting *local* sports through national/global services. Then again, I'm more productive not wasting time on the #NFL.
@cadenceoflife
Remember how much cheaper it was going to be?
@sezduck
@sezduck I'm not convinced the giant entertainment companies care about piracy.
@brianvastag
I'm certain that the ad-free experience is way more important for them to eliminate.
@sezduck
@sezduck @Gargron was going to digitally rent a new release. The two day rental cost was 20% more than it cost me to see the film in my local cinema and they aren’t a cheap cinema either. Needless to say didn’t rent it
@sezduck I’m actually slowly returning back to just buying shows and movies on disc. It slowly becomes cheaper again than having to sub 4 or 5 services. And even then, the movie you wanna watch is on none of them…
@Drakon @sezduck Me too, but unfortunately a lot of new stuff is not being released on physical media.

@sezduck wtf is with these mega company with billionaire CEOs driving up prices and inflation? Do they not have enough nesting doll yachts? Is it some never-ending dick measuring contest? (Literally for Musk)

You'd think at some point they'd realise that no matter how much money they earn, they will never fill that emptiness inside where their soul used to be.

@chloetse @sezduck

bill gates got to spend like a decade fucking up american education because he felt like it and he had the money. then he moved on to the next hobby.

i’ll bet the yachts are nice but bank account interest can pay for those. these folks crave power.

@sezduck i’d also like to mention how Paramount+ inserts unskippable 50 second promos before their shows on their “ad free“ plan.
@MuseumShuffle @sezduck I hate that so much. I refuse to watch ads. I won’t even watch the FAST services like Tubi or Freevee. Waste of my time and they are obnoxious.
@PressTheButtons @sezduck if they had a skip button, I wouldn’t care. The fact that they force you to watch something that long over something you most likely don’t care about over and over again is unbelievably asshole design.
@MuseumShuffle @sezduck It’s the same mentality behind The Algorithm telling us what to watch instead of just letting us watch what we want. They have to show us their latest multimillion dollar bomb nobody asked them to make.
@sezduck Exactly this. Buy a good VPN for $80/year or subscribe to a few streaming platforms for $80/month. I’m currently paying the streaming fees because I want them to continue to create content, but there’s a line and it’s getting close.
@sezduck The sheer number of things that cost money in these screenshots
@sezduck I wait for it to come out on dvd then check it out from my local library. If it doesn’t come out on dvd I don’t watch it. I ❤️ my library.

@khitomers_hamster @sezduck

I second that. I get it on DVD from my local library. Otherwise, I don't worry. I know I can always find something at the library.

@bloodravenlib
Check if your library offers Kanopy, a free streamer that has tons of movies, classes and course vids, documentaries, etc.
@khitomers_hamster @sezduck
@rhizome @bloodravenlib I know it offers Hoopla and other resources I haven't explored. These days I'm happy to leave the TV off and read a book most of the time. I have been greatly disappointed by well loved TV series being destroyed by executives and accountants forcing story destroying changes "for budgetary reasons". I've never read a book series that suffered that interference.

@khitomers_hamster @rhizome

Offerings can vary. My local library here has Hoopla and Libby (formerly Overdrive). I believe they have Kanopy, but have not really checked.

And I hear ya on books not have that certain interference.

@sezduck
Two points:

1.) Apparently Usenet is making a comeback and this could be one of the reasons why.
2.) If there's no legal way to watch a movie, then is it really pirating? No. It's archiving.

@sezduck Literally just told my wife we're going to find other ways to watch the new season of AHS because Hulu isn't worth $18 a month.
@rhizome @sezduck Yes. The price went up again. That's the without ads tier. I can't see paying for a streaming service and also having ads included, which is why I'm going to cancel Prime when they introduce their with and without ads tiers in 2024.
@sezduck I am going back to DVDs.
@sezduck Doesn’t help that the Trek thing is only for the US. P+ in South America only has ENT, PIC, DIS, LD, and just added TNG last month. I think the rest are either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. And PRO is not available anywhere (not even on the Nickelodeon app).

@sezduck

> how to save

pirate.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

@sezduck How much does a good VPN cost?
@wagesj45 @sezduck Mullvad is like $5 a month last I checked
@wagesj45 @sezduck a few $ a month if you have the right promo code. When it runs out, just switch to another service with another promo code before the price goes up

@sezduck PBS Passport for as little as five bucks a month you not only support the US gem PBS but also gain access to a plethora of ad free programming including tons of international options. Shout out to Walters Choice. #PBS

@sezduck image 3: "with cost of streaming services going up, how to save."

... Did they give the correct answer? 😉

@sezduck I save money by not paying for any streaming service

So disappointing. And to think we all thought we were paying in order to escape ads.

@sezduck

@sezduck Bread and circuses… only you can’t afford the bread. Or the circuses.
@aral @sezduck you are told that the bread has been taken by immigrants/single moms/some other marginalized group. The ensuing circus is entirely for upper class...
@sezduck @amberage Streaming platform executives in a year: Pirating hurts our revenues super bad! We need more drm!
@nachtpfoetchen @amberage Yep. And DRM likely 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴 piracy. It’s very annoying when I “buy” a digital movie but can’t put it on my own Plex server for personal viewing.

@sezduck @nachtpfoetchen “options are very limited”

I don’t think that setting up a VPN connection and going to 1337x.to and downloading whatever is “limiting”, but ok

@sezduck "Amazon will start putting ads?"

It already does for us, Ads are about the shows in Prime Itself, and prime keeps forcing users to *subscribe* to more shit through prime video 🤡

It's pretty sad.

@sezduck Yeah, I've seen the skull and bone being hoisted up all around me, wondering when I should don my hat as well.
@sezduck after being upset with #StarTrekDiscovery was removed from #Netflix I got upset. Was looking forward to the new season. So I waited to understand what platform I needed to watch it. Paramount+ not being available in Sweden. So they said use SkyShowtime and you get the Paramount+-content. So I did. But no, no #StarTrekDiscovery there. Even if I had a good deal (50% cost) I cancelled it. Watched what I wanted but my main reason wasn’t there. No need to continue paying then!
@sezduck the consequences of growth imperative laid bare.
@sezduck I have never stopped pirating movies, been pirating for over 20 years. Nobody has ever deleted anything from my hard drives other than me, I can still watch movies and series that aren't currently legally available anywhere anymore. I also download all the videos from Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, etc., that I find remarkable, to keep them safe for later. I have seen too much cool stuff disappear.
@LordCaramac @sezduck lol, same✊🏼i'd rather stop watching stuff altogether than paying one streaming service for their 'selected' content...🤷🏻‍♂️ #thisistheway

Is this inflation?

I am thinking the only right response for consumers, are to hold out from spending. Or pirate the shit.

@sezduck

@sezduck I've gone from being happy to pay a handful of services to get everything I want to doubling the capacity of my NAS.
@sezduck It was inevitable taking into consideration that people pay tones for cable tv, which is more or less a stream of ads with tiny breaks for content. They do it because they can, and bar is very very low. People will get mad a bit, but people also will pay, and that's all what matters.
@sezduck I’ve all but stopped watching TV because of these kinds of crappy practices. It took me a long time to accept that I’m in a world where we can overload ourselves with various kinds of entertainment and not watching anything is an option. In this race to the bottom, unsubscribing is ultimately rather easy…
@sezduck @Luk The European Union Intellectual Property Office confirms the rise of digital piracy in Europe. Who could have predicted it? https://www.globallegalpost.com/news/digital-piracy-increases-by-33-in-2022-says-euipo-report-243832538
Digital piracy increases by 3.3% in 2022, says EUIPO report

For the first time in years, piracy levels rose in 2022, largely driven by TV shows, series, films and manga publications
