@bsmall2 for what it's worth, in the years since I wrote that, I've now largely left RocketChat behind (it was, for a few years, my preferred option) and am now strongly endorsing Matrix/Element (the successor to Riot) - I've even got it set up with the video & audio conference bells and whistles. Its federation abilities makes clearly superior to the also-rans - whether #LibreSoftware or yucky #proprietary.
