I stand by my opinion that Linux is the best for academic work, and I'm specifically talking about humanities here, not the usual suspects (like computer science or maths).

It's just so quiet and good for productivity, no ads, no forced apps, it's free, and you can customise it to your heart's content to create the workflow that best suits you.

@ninokadic

#Linux is best for any kind of work. And it's our only defense against the ever progressing #enshittification.

@Yeekasoose Haha what do you mean by that?
@ninokadic @Yeekasoose if nothing else, it prevents someone else from dictating your environment. Microsoft could say "everyone gets a new ad banner at the top of the OS" or charges for speed/performance. The nature of open source is that you're able to prevent or rectify that.
@grayson @Yeekasoose Yeah... Like the update that made my system slower, or their changes to widgets that removed all of the ones I used while I had windows. Ugh.

@ninokadic

It's a term that describes that all large commercial internet properties are getting increasingly shitty as their owners try to squeeze every last drop off revenue out of them.

@ninokadic @Yeekasoose “enshittification” is a neologism coined by Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) to describe how platforms become terrible over time.

Doctorow’s description: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/

“Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.”
