Yes, drivers of #EVs should pay their fair share of taxes for road maintenance. But taxing providers of free public chargers doesn't do much to incentivize the #ElectricRevolution, especially for apartment dwellers who cannot charge at home for much lower rates than at pay-for public stations.

Why not tack on a VAT for every new $60k+ ICE vehicle sold? There has to be another way to capture those funds from non-EVs.

@giamora So it's an anti-EV tax from the Republicans mob controlling the legislature, and people responding to the article are (falsely) blaming Democrat governor Beshear for the tax. Typical low-information CONservative voters.

@dkbgeek

Is there any kind of messaging you think might speak to those voters to persuade them to vote against the tax? As an angry centrist, I wonder if you can help a leftie like me talk to my friends across the aisle. :)

@giamora I'd approach it (as the article does) from the point of view that they're double-taxing KY residents with EVs, because you pay every year with the $120 registration penalty for EVs, then pay again at any public charger. I suspect that whoever wrote the bill INTENDED to screw everyone charging an EV and the double-dipping is a feature, but now they're caught and back-pedaling on that. TX is worse, our EV penalty is 2x the avg annual gas tax paid by Texans.
@giamora And definitely EVERY time you mention it, describe it as the Republican legislature's tax on KY citizens. Rs will be torn between loving their Republican rulers and hating any tax for any reason...
@giamora In California, I pay a road use tax every year when I register my Tesla to make up for not paying gas taxes. Pretty easy in fact.
@antares I’m about to pay my registration for the year… will be curious what my Fiat 500e pays in said California charges. But at least we’re not paying the $1 in gas tax every time we fill up!
