Sad morning. After returning a day early from a smoky, wet paddling trip. I was awoken at 0645 hours by the cops to tell me that someone had broken into my vehicle. The culprits found the only valuable item that was in the car: my gorgeous #TernBike. I really hope that the fact that it's one-of-a-kind around town will work in my favour in this case. In the meantime, I won't be going out on #GroupRides for awhile. #BikeTooter, #YEG

@EllenInEdmonton

That seriously sucks. I'm sorry. 😧

@mmiasma
Thanks! I'm really happy that it accompanied me on my #RoadTrip adventures!
@EllenInEdmonton ah dammit that's rubbish, I'm sorry
@artbyailbhe
Yup, thanks for commiserating!

@EllenInEdmonton UGH so sorry to hear that πŸ€—

Hopefully it can be found and returned quickly!

@nomadave
Thanks! I always knew I was taking a risk, leaving it in my car but it was much easier on my body than hauling a bike up and down the apartment stairs,
@EllenInEdmonton Oh no! That must be a horrible invasion of privacy, losing your bike. Hopeful wishes for it's recovery.
@Jeneric
The biggest invasion of my privacy was that early morning phone call. Really glad I sewed my PJs from a scrubs pattern so they're perfectly appropriate to wear in public when needed. It was my car, not my home. Still, my bike is really precious to me and I'd like it back.

@EllenInEdmonton

That really sucks.

What is it with people? Envy? Desperation for money / drugs?

I sure hope you get it back.

It's the one thing that puts me off getting a bike - the fact that so many get stolen.

@Jon6705
Yes, bikes are incredibly easy to steal. I managed for about 9 years with a refurbished bike that was 20+ years old and I may be able to reclaim that one for now. They're such an amazing means of transportation and recreation that they're well worth the risk, as long as you stick with one that's reasonably priced. Being able to keep this one folded up in my vehicle made it extra awesome!
And most of the other stolen items were toiletries: Desperation/homelessness.
@EllenInEdmonton oh no! Mojo for getting it back! This stinks!!
@EllenInEdmonton What a bummer! I hope it’s found intact soon.
@EllenInEdmonton oh no, that’s awful! I hope you get it back!
@NicolaDinicola
Thanks, Nicola! The problem with bike ownership is how attached you get to such an easily/frequently-stolen item!!
@EllenInEdmonton This is dreadful news! May you soon be reunited.
@elfkin
I really hope so. In the meantime, there may be more sewing in my near future.
@EllenInEdmonton While I’m the first to advocate for more sewing time, I strongly dislike having one’s bike stolen as a catalyst. Don’t let the bastards get you down!
@elfkin
I definitely am not a fan of bike theft. However, I'm big on making lemonade whenever I'm stuck with lemons. I should have been parked elsewhere last night, still enjoying a paddling trip but we were scared home by extreme smoke. It is what it is.
@EllenInEdmonton @epicdemiologist Oh man, so sorry to hear. Mojo for maybe getting it back!
@Archergal @epicdemiologist
Thanks! It won't be easy to disguise, that's for sure.
@EllenInEdmonton
Can you do a simple post with just the details and some alt-text on the photo? Much better for a 'wanted' poster to forward with a boost.
@lauxmyth
Done, thanks for the suggestion. My brain wasn't on #AltText this morning!
@EllenInEdmonton tagging @ternbicycles in case they can also help get the word out.
@kimu @ternbicycles
Thanks, they may be able to help. I've never seen another bike that looked remotely like mine around town. The colour can be altered but not the geometry.
@EllenInEdmonton oh, that sucks so much! What a gorgeous bike, too!
@jillithd
Thanks, it's been very good to me! Luckily, there's a bike I can borrow and I hope it will return.
@[email protected] That’s terrible! I’m sorry that happened!
@EllenInEdmonton That's terrible! I hope you get it back. You might want to email the picture to local bike shops in case they see it. Crossing my fingers for you!
@EllenInEdmonton
I’m so sorry to hear about your bike. I hope it can be recovered.
@whoosh
Me too, thanks! I'm very attached to it and intended it to be my primary transportation in future years.
@EllenInEdmonton oh shit. I'm so sorry. 😞
@ECityMom
Thanks, it's a super special bike and I'm not a fan of spending my time/$ to repair car windows!
@EllenInEdmonton that is such a bummer!!!! I hope you get it back and in good shape.
@EllenInEdmonton That's terrible, sorry to hear 😞
@shaun Thanks! If it hadn't been for the horrible smoke, I would have still been at Lakeland this morning, with my car in a different part of the city. Luck of the draw.
@EllenInEdmonton, damn smoke, did you have it covered, or could it be seen through the window?
I often leave my bike in the back and have wondered if I should hide it.
@shaun It was covered by a blanket and probably wasn't very visible at 5 am. Still, the thieves were just randomly smashing windows. They don't pay much attention to what's inside. I thought about keeping it locked, which might have meant that they left it behind but it would depend on the operation. The bike was left behind in at least 2 break-ins, possibly because folks couldn't figure out how to unfold it.
I'm so sorry. That's such an awful invasion of privacy and such a terrible thing to lose. If it doesn't turn up, your homeowners/renters or car insurance might cover it. Fingers and toes crossed that you get your beautiful bike back!
@ThunderHoney
Thanks so much! Since my bike and computers are my only valuables, I have no renters' insurance. I can check my car insurance but I think I'd need a rider to cover a bike theft.

@EllenInEdmonton

Oh no. That is such a crappy think to happen to you. And now you have to deal with the emotional and financial fallout from someone else's greed. Grrr. May the pinata at their next birthday party be filled with bees. 🀬

I hope it finds it's way back to you and if not, I hope your insurance covers it and your phone's physical loss.

@KDramaQn
From what I could see the motivation for the crime was survival versus greed. Most of what was collected was toiletries, shoes, pillows...
Still, it's an enormous nuisance to try to find replacement glass for a 20-year-old car. I heed to see if my bike will be covered by car insurance but it seems unlikely. Glass is usually not covered by the deductible.

@EllenInEdmonton

I would think that the bike, which normally resides at your residence, might be covered by contents?

@KDramaQn
Yes, it probably would, if I had renters' insurance! It hasn't been worth the cost since I have so few valuables although it would be a godsend if I had to replace everything!
