Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 1

The first photo is the view from near my camp on Cloudy Pass. Today has been incredible but tough. Hiked 20 miles with 6400’ elevation gain. This is not like the PCT, it’s rough trails that go straight up for hours. But i’m so happy, I wanted an epic long weekend and Glacier Peak Wilderness is providing that in spades so far.

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 2

The highlight of today was seeing my first bear in two decades. He was rummaging around a meadow next to the backpackers camp at Image Lake. Explored some unmaintained trails above Image Lake. Headed down toward Canyon Lake but turned around when I realized there was no one around for miles. Visited the Miners Ridge Lookout Tower.

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 3

After spending the weekend with absolutely no cell reception, I woke up and hiked out the 21 miles I had planned to split into two days. Glacier Peak is an amazing place, and I plan to return, but I tend to start missing my family after three days. The North Cascades are truly special, I could easily retire in northern Washington.

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Wrap

Here are a few more photos. I would like to thank @GPJohnston for planning most of my trip for me! I would also like to thank @lonelymtn for suggesting I create an itinerary to share. I created a route on AllTrails with waypoints marked where I camped. Many other campsites are also marked on the map.

@andrewbriscoe @GPJohnston @lonelymtn Beautiful pics! Glad your trip worked out so well. That’s terrific that you’ve posted your route and the various campsites. I’ve benefited a lot from posted routes and, in fact, used someone else’s route for a section on my last trip. This was a route from their gpx file superimposed on the map in my navigation app.
@TimKStanton Thank you! I’m in awe of you being able to get that to work. No cap. I’m sure I could learn but the apps i’ve tried have been very un-user friendly. I thought it was a good idea to create a route and it would benefit the community if more people did. I’m so grateful to everyone who has suggested places for me to go. I have a large list and have used several ideas. This community is awesome!
@andrewbriscoe Looks like a wonderful trip, Andrew! Yes, I know what you mean about that feeling of wanting to go home after 3 days. PNW is a beautiful area-- I wish I could beam myself there!
@TimKStanton It’s such a beautiful place! It was also a very long drive with a very rough road to the trailhead.
@andrewbriscoe breathtaking, thank you for sharing
@meer_salt My pleasure! Northern Washington is highly recommended.
@andrewbriscoe on my “to amble” list!
@andrewbriscoe Beaitiful. I still haven't seen a bear out hiking, I *think* I want to.
@Subumbral I don’t think we have a lot of black bears in Oregon. I never even see bear sign. Only place i’ve seen them is on the Rogue River trail. I did inch closer to the bear to get a photo vs inching away. 🤣 He’s so cute, must be harmless right?
@andrewbriscoe Well yeah, look at the cute ears! I've looked for them in Alaska (brown bears), I always feel like they're watching me and snickering behind their paws. There were a couple that ran along the shore chasing the ferry, and they were fast, like big cats. But cute.
@Subumbral It’s terrifying how fast they are. If I had seen a brown bear I would have inched away for sure!
@andrewbriscoe @Subumbral I encountered a black bear in NC. It smiled as it ran by. Terrifyingly fast. Taller than a great dane, the size that would look down at a tall person if standing on hind legs. They are all over Asheville, as hundreds have been GPS tagged, but people hardly ever encounter them, and injury to humans is very rare. I am not sure if PNW black bears are the same kind or not.
@skry @Subumbral I think they must be similar but I’ve only seen them in two places now. This bear saw me but wasn’t bothered. I felt comfortable but like you said, i’m sure he would be huge up close.
@andrewbriscoe purdy.
Looks like the bear has done a good job fattening up for winter
@PizzaDemon That’s what @imkwazy said. I would have loved to see how big he was up close but i’m not that crazy.
@andrewbriscoe That bear looks about ready for a few months’ sleep!
@tsupasat It’s probably going to be very cold up in those mountains soon.
@andrewbriscoe Great photos! Love the bear.
@madrivermichael Thank you! The bear was so cool.
@andrewbriscoe omg. just beautiful. 😍 Thanks for the hard work you put in to bring these amazing views to the comfort of my couch. 😆
@KengOnTheRoad Thanks! I had no idea what to expect at Cloudy Pass but it sounded like a popular place so I slowly made the final ascent. Very happy I made it up there. Super cold that night though.

@andrewbriscoe Such incredible views, thanks for sharing!
@andrewbriscoe Wow! Incredible photos! Stay safe.
@Heidiknits Thank you! No accidents and didn’t get eaten by bears. 😀
@andrewbriscoe
Hope you have reasonable weather. Such amazing scenery!
@HikerSelma Thanks! I got super lucky with weather, none of the possible rain materialized.
@andrewbriscoe truly is epic! Great photos!!
@Opa Thank you! I can’t believe a place like that exists.
@andrewbriscoe congratulations, that is a massive effort in a day
@elperronegro Thank you! And that was after arriving at the trailhead at 10 PM and sleeping for 4 hours. I slept very good after that.
@andrewbriscoe great views, looks like no smoke problems 🤩
@jds Thank you! I was worried about smoke but lucked out. There was a little smoke at the trailhead from the airplane lake fire but great otherwise. Apparently, another PCT closure is imminent for that but the closure just north of where I was reopened due to the rain they had.
Wow! Sounds incredible! And breathtaking photos! Enjoy & be safe! 🙌🙏
@RiversideBryan It was fun, thanks! It was definitely the most remote location i’ve been to so far. Beautiful area!
@andrewbriscoe So beautiful!! And, 20 miles with 6,400' elevation gain while carrying a loaded backpack is an amazing workout!
@TimKStanton Thanks! It definitely was, I burned over 3300 active calories.
@andrewbriscoe what a beauty reward for a hard day. You are an intrepid hiker. I won’t be making anymore hard climbs like that. So thanks for taking me there.
@Inthewilderness Thank you! It was probably a bit more than I should have done. But the reward was great!
@andrewbriscoe It seems to me sometimes the harder the journey the greater the reward at the end.
