Texas Parents Outraged Over Kids' Book About Kitten Who Wants To Be A Unicorn

They've become a parody of themselves.

You should understand right now it has nothing to do with a specific book and everything to do with controlling other people β€˜s choices
Fascists always want to keep people ignorant
Only democracies want as educated a populous as possible
@SueInRockville @georgetakei Good point! Fascism is on the rise over here in Europe as well. Still, I found myself wondering how it was ever possible to make so many seemingly ordinary Americans go stark mad so quickly. And what you say goes some way to explain it.
@georgetakei The problem is that those parents are sick. In their minds. Nuts. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
@georgetakei
Best publicity possible, though. Hope that book's sales go through the roof.
@georgetakei I’m gonna say a lack of education, ignorance and possibly inbreeding is the problem. πŸ€”
@georgetakei
What is wrong with these people who interpret everything in a sexual framework?

@georgetakei

Was there such furore over Skippyjon Jones, the kitten who likes to call himself a chihuahua?

@georgetakei when your moral and political identity is based on victimhood, but your life is defined by privilege, you've got to tilt at windmills
@georgetakei it is the PMRC of this generation, George. You remember Tipper Gore and her idiotic pursuit of satanic lyrics. This is the new idiotic hysteria.
@georgetakei the voters. They are the problem. Stop voting Repugnants into office and watch those contemptible issues go back under the rocks from which they came.
@georgetakei What is the problem, you say? The main character of this story desires an appendage longer than it is wide. Do I have to spell out to you the pornographic nature of something longer than it is wide? And in a children's book! What next? Chairs with their legs uncovered?

@georgetakei

Everyone knows kittens want to grow up and marry a prince and live happily ever after!

We can’t let this left-wing misinformation stand!οΏΌ!

@georgetakei Stories like this encourage reasoning by analogy, and the GOP is opposed to reason.

@georgetakei

Here’s the problem:

β€˜The book is described as a "delightful kitty and unicorn picture-book story that celebrates the magic of friendshipβ€”and being exactly who you want to be!'"’

The book scares parents who want their children to be conformists, because the book teaches children to be free-thinkers. This situation is very much like the party in the book 1984, which does not tolerate any kind of non-conformity. The parents are scapegoating this book as part of their latest session of β€˜two minutes hate’ a ritual that is almost like a religious revival in its fervor:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Minutes_Hate

I often think of FOX News and their commentators when I think of this ritual in 1984. People like Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson stimulate hatred in people. It’s such a strong parallel that seems like mind control.

No problem. Things are proceeding exactly as planned.

1) Baselessly declare that trans people are pedophiles who seek to "groom" innocent children.
2) As part of the extensive follow-up, scrutinize every library book for signs of trans grooming. Remove from circulation any book found to be "questionable."
3) To streamline the process of keeping kids safe, just close the libraries.
4) Another generation of frightened, ignorant voters, and the survival of the GOP, is secured!

@georgetakei This must be the level that the GOP voters are reading at now.
@georgetakei Have these fuckers never heard of a caticorn? or the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale The Ugly Duckling?
@georgetakei I've got some bad news for them about the Very Hungry Caterpillar.
@georgetakei
There is no problem , for regular people. Its another example of people being carefully trained to not be confused by the facts.

@georgetakei
To a certain frame of mind, people exist to be pigeonholed and exist within pre-defined boundaries, with the only possible movement being along equally strict, pre-paved paths. Unsurprisingly, this ties in with the notion of implicit predetermination.

The act of autonomy, therefore, in seizing the reins of one's own life and discarding the yokes and chains, is alien, amoral, a threat to their own choice to colour within and only within the lines...

...and to force everyone else to, while they're at it.

@georgetakei One day, in a high school bio class I taught, a girl remarked that she would like to be a unicorn. Several other students agreed and a short discussion broke out on what color they would be, whether unicorns could fly, and what other superpowers unicorns might have. Kids have imaginations and some of them would like to be animals, especially magical ones.
@georgetakei There is no problem. Apart from the raving lunacy bit. Seems to be a global phenomenon :(
@georgetakei
OMG, this is just so ridiculous that you cannot even make this crap up. How insecure do you need to be in order to attack a cute children's book?
@georgetakei They're just desperate to be mad.
@georgetakei remember when Dungeouns and Dragons and Rock music was the problem. This feels similar. A whole lot of effort into stoking fear for no reasons.
@georgetakei maybe they can't read and thought it was kiddy porn?
@georgetakei fake Christians are the problem here. Stupid fake Christians.
@georgetakei In the book the Dalkey Archives, Irish lateral thinker Flann O’Brien discussed at length the molecular transfer while an Irish policeman became his bike and the bike became him. Bet the GOP collective consciousness would go into melt-down if they read that!!
@georgetakei shifting the conversation to the vulnerable and minuscule minority of trans people so we don't have to talk about important issues such as poverty, healthcare, climate, immigration, housing, election fraud, violent crime, etc. has really gotten out of hand or not? JFC.
@georgetakei It's a good bet that most of the people complaining about this book have never actually seen it.

@georgetakei Imagination itself is becoming terrifying and dangerous to them as they lean ever further towards the right.

It makes total sense when you remember that one of the first steps toward a better world is to be able to imagine it and to organize.

@georgetakei I am hoping this is the β€œhave you no sense of decency?” moment librarians have been waiting for.
@georgetakei God forbid we should let the children be who they THINK they want to be. We must mold them, nay we must break and crush and fold them into whom ever we the adults believe they SHOULD be. After all, we are the adults here!
@georgetakei When I saw this, I assumed that these people would go ballistic over the words "Don we now our gay apparel". Then I looked it up on Google. They did, and Hallmark changed it to "fun apparel".
@georgetakei Oh good grief! In 1976, my daughter st the age of 4, saw the Sandy Duncan and Danny Kaye version of Pinocchio and demanded that we β€œcall my name Pinocchio!” Apparently innocence and imaginative play are impermissablevin their warped world view. A wooden puppet β€” horrors! And what of all the 1950s girls who galloped around my grade school playground pretending to be horses? I would hate to live in the tiny, constipated brains of these book-banning dullards.
