Why do all heraldic lions/panthers look like they just stepped on a piece of Lego?
Example #2 of "stepped on piece of Lego lion"
Example #3 of "stepped on piece of Lego lion" the eyes alone on this one really tells the story of a lion that will soon after clear out the cubs room leaving only trashbags behind
@ohyran that one stepped on a piece of Lego and has, subsequently, bitten its tongue. It's deciding how mad it is.
@ohyran Why? Because the darn bears are throwing legos!

@mhd although it doesn't look very pleased about it either tbh :D

More like it too stepped on some Lego and is now holding it up going "wtf is this?!"

@ohyran “Laundry day” and someone didn’t throw in the anti-static sheet into the dryer… Don’t you just hate that? So scratchy and ill fitting… and the pants ride up into your crotch when you run, n’ try to jump up & catch the late bus…
@ohyran Lion are standing as a way to distinguish them from evil leopards 😁 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard_(heraldry) I just learned this from Michel Pastoureau who wrote a fascinating book: L'Ours, histoire d'un roi déchu (The Bear: history of a fallen king) 🤩
Leopard (heraldry) - Wikipedia

@ohyran @Tim_Eagon the ones that step on an old-school d4 have fire coming from every orifice.
@ohyran only the "rampant" ones do
@ohyran Because the lions are not in pain but roar loudly to make more of an impression.
@ohyran @daveybot The Finnish version is stepping on the curved saber of Russian Empire while holding a straight Finnish sword.
@ohyran @daveybot (Still, I’m sure LEGO would be more sore)

@tapaninaho @ohyran @daveybot

Just to rise my glasses: the coat of arms is from (pre-)1580, predating the Russian Empire (founded 1720) by 150 years.

The sabre looks like turkic-mongol hybrid, as used by the Golden Horde (Sweden's neighbour since Novgorod of the Rus confederation got under their sphere of influence in the late 13th century).

As such, the sabre identifies Muscowy (who reached Sweden's borders in the late 14th century) as the heir to mongols, not as heir to the Rus.

@tapaninaho @ohyran @daveybot

Further, this "who is Muscowy heir to" is a large part of the modern Russian identity crisis. They claim to be the successor state to (Kievan) Rus [and to (East) Rome], but most of the central areas needed to for that claim, most importantly Kiev, are outside the current borders.

Hence the current war.

@iju @ohyran @daveybot Very cool, thanks for the extra detail and clarification!
@ohyran Not to mention why their genitals are almost always hidden...
@Elias @ohyran I love how your comment lumps in heraldry with all the "other" furry art!
@ohyran @stavvers that’s why Lego was banned by treaty until the 20th century
@ohyran that would make you roar too!
@ohyran You try to hold that pose for as long as it took to draw a coat of arms and not make a face and then we’ll talk, mister.
@ohyran and are sexually aroused by it
@ohyran aiui “panther” is an alias for “lion passant” (as in the arms for england or cambridge) so a lion rampant isn’t a panther

@ohyran

Because the blazonry read, "or, a lion rampant dexter, lego superscandens"?

@ohyran some even look like they managed to impale themselves in the process…

@ohyran

Would you want to fight a lion that just stepped on a lego

@ohyran And don't forget that erection 🙈 #canNotUnsee
