I was dimly aware that Age of Empires II had a really well-done modern remaster, and was getting new and updated content as if it were a current title. I was unprepared for just how beautiful it all looks at 4K, however! I know every asset has been completely redone, but the art design really holds up. I would *love* to see more 2D classics like Red Alert 2 get the same kind of high-quality treatment, with remastered assets and brand-new DLC campaigns. Revisit and continue games long-abandoned
I need to find some nice ready-made maps to take some better screenshots, but I'm very impressed so far. In an industry that is so often filled with quick and dirty cash-grabs, it's real nice to see a labor of love like this. Two thumbs up for Age of Empires II Definitive Edition (…which is $5 in the Steam sale this week!)
@stroughtonsmith So many childhood memories. Looks gorgeous! I *think* I’d love this on the iPhone so I can play it when I have some time here and there.
@simonbs @stroughtonsmith Back in the day, I thought things like 3D touch would've translated well for a game like Age…
@simonbs @stroughtonsmith All I want is some age of empires on iPad.

@stroughtonsmith the game still has a pretty active community, even before Definitive Edition. Definitely the most active of the whole franchise.

They also have tournaments with not too bad price money. Its actually quite fun to watch.

@stroughtonsmith also plays really well on a controller
@stroughtonsmith RA2 and AOE2 were part of my childhood. I’m currently watching this hilarious series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGVjiUKVQd71XMHgNZpREVz3rxwEgApiK&si=J5ZGJXr3UgBTLZ3a

@stroughtonsmith Thanks for the sale info, just bought it!

Been playing AOE4 recently, but looking forward to taking a stroll down memory lane.

Great memories of 3 friends and I getting together at one house for weekend LAN party, with our Tower PC’s, CRT monitors, and a Netgear hub. Play all day, crash, wake up and do it all over again.

@stroughtonsmith stunning. so fun. I love how well this is done - one of those cases where it looks as good as you remember it.
@sdw @stroughtonsmith The music remaster is also beautiful – and on Apple Music!
@twostraws @stroughtonsmith did they remaster the wololo sound?
@sdw @twostraws they did, because the original was from an asset library and they didn't want to have to deal with figuring out copyright from the fast and loose dev processes of the 90s 😂

@stroughtonsmith @sdw @twostraws I spent so much time in AoE II! I do have this version but need to check it out again. Red Alert was remastered a few years ago - not sure if you knew!
@keir @stroughtonsmith @sdw @twostraws I really with this was available on iPad. It would make a great couch game.
@stroughtonsmith @sdw @twostraws That was a great video to watch. They also found a bunch of old recordings in multiple format, including tapes, and they're uploading them to a NoClip Archives YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@NoclipArchive

@stroughtonsmith I would like to be able to play this on my Mac. But it was published by Microsoft originally so I doubt it
@SimonCHulse @stroughtonsmith it’s on Xbox Cloud
@idevecono @stroughtonsmith aha. Thanks. Is there a way to just buy the one game on there or monthly sub only?
@SimonCHulse @stroughtonsmith monthly sub only but there is a $1 first month deal going on I believe, another budget alternative is buying the game on Steam and play it on GeforceNow free tier

@stroughtonsmith Such a transformative series! Used to play with my 5 siblings, all the time!

It was lead by the team at Forgotten Empires. They also did Age l, Age lll, & Age of Mythology, including an expansion pack!

I reached out many years back (2016) about a Mac port, & one of the co-founders (Bert) said that it was entirely Microsoft's decision to green-light. *sigh* 🥲

@stroughtonsmith I love this game for more than 20 years. The AoE2:DE profited from Corona lockdown and has a very stable playerbase. The Pro scene is getting along and MS even sponsors the major tournaments. One of the best things is that the community isn‘t toxic most likely because the player base is more mature.
@stroughtonsmith Warcraft 2 would be fun to play again.
@stroughtonsmith it hits that hard-to-define sweet spot for any remaster, where it looks like the version you remember in your head
@stroughtonsmith for me it’s The Settlers 2. There was a remake in 2007 but now the remake needs a remake. 🤪
@stroughtonsmith Are you trying to sabotage my work hours?!
@stroughtonsmith And the community is also super active and nice, with lots of tournaments and streaming events
