I'm getting really tired of seeing these "I hate video tutorials" posts getting boosted into my feed. Here's a particularly bad example:

https://jorts.horse/@basic_charnel/110972520776975093

Are video tutorials over-used? Yes. Should a text tutorial also be provided? Yes. Are video tutorials a bad thing? ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NO!

In spite of having a PhD in math, being a senior software engineer, and being someone who's generally considered quite fluent in written english, there is no worse way for me to consume information than long-winded prose. I'm probably somewhat dyslexic, I'm definitely ADHD, and I probably have something else that may or may not have a name. The end result of my cocktail is that I really easily get lost in a pile of text, even if it is well-organized. The rise of video tutorials has been a god-send.

Have a recipe? I'd much rather a 60s TikTok video over a long-winded blog post with 30 pages of stories about your Italian grandmother as front-matter and a recipe at the end. I'd rather a TikTok video than a short, straightforward recipe without all the crap. The video is straight-up better for me.

So next time you're tempted to boost that shit, please take a moment and think about it and then don't. Thanks.

@faithisleaping Personally, I prefer text because it's actually searchable...

Even if a YouTube video is subtitled one can't just type a word to find it or something but has to patiently watch the entire thing, which then makes one's ability to extract the desired info depend entirely on how good the editing of the vudeo creator is.

Whereas text can be searched way faster...

@kkarhan idk, when someone says "it's ableist to demand only written tutorials and no videos because a lot of disabled people can only learn with the videos, therefore we should have both," I don't think the proper response is "No we should have text"
Because if you mean we should have both, that's exactly what OP said and you're not really adding to the conversation?
And if you mean we should only have text... It's still ableist lol

@raphaelmorgan @faithisleaping

OFC we should have BOTH!

Sadly I don't get to do BOTH, but being forced to make text - which I'd have to do even if I only wanted to make a video - #fact!

I don't get the time and resources to make a video!

What we have to agree on as an #InvoncenientTruth is that #loginwalling info - espechally on #Discord - should get people banned from any software development - period!
