"We are killing this ecosystem": the scientists tracking the Amazon's fading health

Climate change, deforestation and other human threats are driving the rainforest towards a tipping point of sustainability. Researchers are racing to chart the Amazon’s future.

@Ruth_Mottram that’s horrible … but thank you for sharing.

@nature

@ArneBab @nature I feel like you said that yesterday too! But I know what you mean...

@Ruth_Mottram yes, I did ☺ — it’s a persistent theme: it’s important to be informed, but lots of news are dire warnings.

That’s why I’m glad that my climate links turned out to contain quite a bit of hope: https://www.draketo.de/wissen/klimalinks

(which is one reason why I like to spread them: I started collecting them just to have an overview instead of daily distress, and that overview shows that part of the distress is psychological: weighting negatives higher than positives).

@Ruth_Mottram just look at the fraction of hope ( 💡 ) compared to the fraction of warnings ( ⚠ ). When I created the list, I expected it to be 95% warnings, but it turned out to be at least 30% hope (positive developments that show that we have a chance to avoid the worst). https://www.draketo.de/wissen/klimalinks

Had we started 10 years earlier — just doing what we do now but earlier — the fraction of hope would be a lot higher.

But that we have so much hope is the fruit of fighting for decades.

@Ruth_Mottram @nature Nearly every single Amazon acre that has been cleared is for one single purpose

@Ruth_Mottram @nature reminds me of something i recently read --

the 'life sciences' are increasingly becoming sciences of the dead

@Ruth_Mottram @nature This has been going on for a long long time, but Bolsonaro did a huge amount of damage. And trade agreements with Europe and the USA encouraged it.
